Donna Lee Bowen Bowen has completed consulting projects on aspects of population, politics, development, and women’s status for the World Bank, the Ford Foundation, the Smithsonian Institution, and the United States Agency for International Development. "So I went into the village prepared to ask women about their families, about the children, and whether or not Islam would permit family planning for them...My personal interest was in the area of family planning. I had come to Morocco to study attitudes toward family and religion and had found that the best way to learn about any concept was to examine a force that attacked it....I returned to the capital city, Rabat, and pored over the data. Finally I realized that the women who were against family planning and saw it as un-Islamic were women to whom any reduction of family size or the inability to have children threatened their position as wife and mother. (Source) "Although a majority of Muslims worldwide agree with the stance taken at the population conference, and most would state that Islam forbids abortion, the Muslim theological position on abortion does not approximate the Roman Catholic condemnation of the practice. A full prohibition of abortion represents neither the sophisticated Muslim jurisprudence literature on abortion nor current practices of some Muslim women." (Source) "Globalisation in the form of must-have mobile phones affects gender and generational relations in the Middle East and North Africa. As this new form of communication technology spreads to secondary and university students, it impacts the traditionally strong institution of the Middle Eastern family. In Morocco, gender relations and generational dynamics are changing as this technology breaks down traditional spatial and associational boundaries between young men and women. Membership in a global citizenry offers young Moroccans both status and western patterns of romance. This study demonstrates that young women and young men utilise mobile phones for different purposes. Mobile phones facilitate behaviour that young people know violates Moroccan social norms, but which are permitted by the western mores conveyed through global media. Our research in Morocco may have resonance in the rest of the Middle East but differs from what research reports in Europe." [link to www.moneyteachers.org] |

I remember thinking at the time: why would such a renowned (non-LDS) scholar, as he was, want to come to BYU? In light of what is really going on, I think it's interesting to think about perhaps not that he wanted to but was asked to, as have many others, to do some pro-Marxist work. It is also interesting to think Jeff Holland, former BYU Pres, was a "Yalie" .... The Russian department head was totally pro-Russia in a way that really got to me (Gary Browning--he got sent to be a mission president over there and was almost anti-Baltic in his pro Russian approach -- the Baltics were lumped in with the Russian mission, despite the fact that they have a terrible fear of and enmity toward Russians who are their oppressors)." There's another program he was highly connected with: the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. I think part of his role was to get top notch BYU students (who are gullible or willing to believe anything they hear at an Ivy League school) to attend Fletcher and then go on into careers with the CIA and FBI. I often heard when at BYU that those two organizations loved to hire Mormon students because they were so honest. Honest, and gullible, or should I say naive. [link to www.moneyteachers.org] |
