This comes directly from the NASA website. It is a press release from the Royal Astronomical Society labeled 'for immediate release'. It was released in 1999.

Thanks for adding to the info Sickscent. It is obvious there is something out there. Only time will tell what it actually is.

More incorrect assumptions of man. There is a dark body, yes, and it's primary purpose is to tow the whole solar system around the central sun of Alcyone, for this region. It does not shoot comets at us.

I was very into this theory, as Sickscent can attest.

But I am wondering from other things I have read - do we even know for sure that the Oort cloud exists?

I do think we will, but it could be many things. For example, a dense plasma column might do the trick.

You should read the article, maybe your terminology is incorrect, nothing is "shooting comets" at us.

The cosmic snowballs that form the hearts of comets generally hang out in the Oort Cloud until their orbits are nudged by some outside force. This push could come from one of three things, Matese said. The constant gravitational pull of the Milky Way’s disk can drag comets out of their icy homes and into the inner solar system. A passing star can shake comets loose from the Oort Cloud as it zips by. Or a large companion like Nemesis or Tyche can pull comets out of their comfort zones.

From what I gather it takes a while to loosen these comets and then some more time before it finds its path and makes its way towards earth.

Interesting insight, Riker.
The only thing that makes our science fallible is the fact that humans are fallible themselves. We try to make things fit our limited understanding.
I wouldn't be surprised if there were plenty of things out there beyond our capabilities of reason. Hell, Look at some of the messed up things we have discovered just recently.

Those of us who like to name things may as well call that "somewhere" the Oort cloud. Naming an unknown doesn't mean you understand it.

There is that term "icy" again. We must reiterate comets are not dirty snowballs. They are electrically charged balls of matter, energy and plasma (in the tails).
