Hey might as well make something out of this. Get a large butterfly net and charge the swarm. Catch a few thousand or so and save them to eat, good source of protein.

There was about 8 of them getting into my vegetably patch this afternoon. They didnt look normal either, were lighter coloured and far too big. Took the broom to them, they pissed off somewhere.

I'm not in a flood zone being 230 mtrs above sea levels. The rain isn't at monsoon levels, but it's a lot for where we live, don't forget we have just come out of 7 years of drought. Haven't heard anything about locusts, but they aren't an unheard thing in Aus at this time of year. I have noticed hardly any christmas beetles this year.... and no cicadas. It must be due to the rain

We have too many xmas beetles and cicadas, they drive us nuts.We live on acreage now , but last year and many years before that we lived in town and I always wondered where the xmas beetles were...I now know

lol. Where are you at. I remember when I was young there were always shit loads of beetles, I've only seen one so far this year. Same with cicadas... usually they are deafening.

Sunshine coast, queensland, if you could only hear the bastard cicadas now and my son has just told me he has picked up 29 xmas beetles tonight, there are three in the room with me now ..on their backs of course

and it has been raining almost non stop for about 3 days

Beautiful, I will be up your way next month doing the theme parks with my kids. Staying at the Diamond Beach Resort at Broadbeach. I just hope the rain stops.

I live about 1 hour south of Wagga Wagga, and while we aren't flooded, our local Dam (which holds 3 times the volume of Sydney Harbour) went from 15% capacity to 100% capacity over a few short months!

Usually, this far south, Summers are HOT and very DRY. But it has been akin to Queensland weather this summer so far (I used to live in North Qld / Gold & Sunshine Coasts)

A friend of mine just last week was checking out a place Terranderra (I think that's how he pronounced it) as he's looking to moving to the Riverina area for cheaper lifestyle.
Guess this flooding news has given him a bit of wake up call as to what country folks go through.

I would be very wary of drinking tap water after such big rain. It usually means there will be a high amount of Crypto Spiridium and giardia. Let alone blue green algae blooms.

Dunedoo has had more than 171mm so far this month, three times the monthly average and only 24mm short of their wettest December in 99 years of records, set in 1926.

The loss of crops is also expected to have implications for some of Australia's staple foods

There is still a question mark over the ability of Australian bread makers to meet demand with local wheat, with gluten already being imported.

I've just returned to Sydney from my farm at Coonabarabran. No locusts but it rained heavily......187ml in 4 hours. The Castlereagh River was pumping but no flood damage at Coona.

My front dam overflowed and formed a creek across my driveway ....no big deal but I've added upgrading the drainage to that dam to my 'to do' list.

On the return journey I had to take an alternate route as Mudgee and Gulgong were flooded and impassable.

There is of course the usual cicadas but not locusts well not in enough proportions to even notice them.
