Giant swarm of locusts hits border
TOWNS in the state's northwest were bracing last night for an onslaught from a massive locust swarm.

The region between Swan Hill and Echuca was expected to be in the firing line of the 25km-wide swarm.

Locusts were expected to start crossing the border late last night. The swarm was reportedly six times the size of the largest swarm to hit the state so far this year.

It was spotted about 1.30pm yesterday in the area around Hay and Conargo in New South Wales.

Up to a million locusts were seen flying towards the southwest.

"Where they stop will really depend on the winds," State Controller for Locusts Russell McMurray said.

2Mr McMurray urged farmers to be vigilant and motorists to beware. He said locust swarms could reduce driver visibility and block radiators, causing overheating.

And the Locusts, that remain a mystery to me at this point lol.

[link to news.ninemsn.com.au]

There was no locusts in Melbourne I seen

A friend of mine in Thomastown sees them daily, not swarm proportions, but definitely plague locusts (they're bigger); they reckon the birds are having a field day lol.

I drive through Thomastown and all through over to the other side I think if they were around I would see them.
There is of course the usual cicadas but not locusts well not in enough proportions to even notice them.

Locust Bisque

1 gallon locust shells
2 onions, roughly chopped
1 clove garlic, chopped
1 celery stalk
2 carrots
1/2 tsp. powdered mace
salt and pepper to taste
1 cup whipping cream

Put all ingredients except whipping cream into a large stew pot, and fill with water. Bring to the boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 3 hours. Process in blender or food processor in batches, and strain before returning to clean pot. Add whipping cream, being sure not to allow it to boil.

Serve with animal crackers.

This recipe was prepared especially for Louise's brother, Steve Ripley, who always loved locust shells.

Serves 6.
