Perhaps those locusts could be put to use as a source of protien or something ?! Fried locust, chocolat covered locust, locust on rye bread maybe ?

Somehow the phrase "Do you want fries with that" doesn't work here.

Locust Bisque

1 gallon locust shells
2 onions, roughly chopped
1 clove garlic, chopped
1 celery stalk
2 carrots
1/2 tsp. powdered mace
salt and pepper to taste
1 cup whipping cream

Put all ingredients except whipping cream into a large stew pot, and fill with water. Bring to the boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 3 hours. Process in blender or food processor in batches, and strain before returning to clean pot. Add whipping cream, being sure not to allow it to boil.

Serve with animal crackers.

This recipe was prepared especially for Louise's brother, Steve Ripley, who always loved locust shells.

Serves 6.

Australia is crawling with noxious pests, why should a few million locusts surprise anyone?

like new zealanders?

As former NZ PM Sir Rob Muldoon once said, New Zealanders immigrating to Australia raised the average IQ in both countries!

Re: Massive Swarm of Locusts in Australia? Mass Evacuations?
I've just returned to Sydney from my farm at Coonabarabran. No locusts but it rained heavily......187ml in 4 hours. The Castlereagh River was pumping but no flood damage at Coona.

My front dam overflowed and formed a creek across my driveway ....no big deal but I've added upgrading the drainage to that dam to my 'to do' list.

On the return journey I had to take an alternate route as Mudgee and Gulgong were flooded and impassable.

Also, it is really strange reading about locusts in your veggie patches, being too wet to cut your hay, summer and being in your pool as I sit here at my computer and look out at a blizzard pelting my window. We woke up to 7 inches of snow overnight! I miss summer already!

I can't beleive you fellow aussies don't even know whats going on in your own backyard!

The voracious insects crossed the Murray River, south of Swan Hill, yesterday in swarms stretching up to 25km wide, according to the Department of Primary Industries.

UPDATE 11:47am: MILLIONS of locusts which forced the closure of today's Donald races in Victoria's north are heading south.

It's because we have to put up with the "News" on the major TV channels which mostly talk about sports and other shit.... but the real news we need to know is hidden away.

We've heard a lot about the floods and evacuations, but nothing about locusts.

I wish the locusts would attack the MSM, maybe then we'd be told about what's going on.

Maaaate, of course we have no clue of what's in our neighbours yard... ever tried going walkabout? Crikey, you better pack a lunch if you do, because it'll be weeks before you see a dirt road, let alone one of those tar sealed things. How long you think it'd take to trek across Aus?

Re: Massive Swarm of Locusts in Australia? Mass Evacuations?
From the DPI current situation updates:

“However in Melbourne, we are unlikely to see the dense swarms that we’ve seen in the north of the state over recent days,” Mr Berg said.

“So while locust swarming behaviour is quite unpredictable, it’s my expectation that we could see some low level activity over coming days in Melbourne and suburbs but not enough to seriously disrupt traffic or other transport or cause serious damage to people's gardens.

“There is a much lower probability that night flights of locust migrations will result in higher densities of locusts being detected in Melbourne.

“Outer suburbs are more likely to be affected than inner suburbs.”

Good God, these things can DISRUPT transport and traffic??? And night flights? What the hell is that? That sounds disturbing and scary.
