They got their asses sued off for doing this at soldier's funeral but is in appeal. They tried it up here at a funeral a month ago but chickened out due to the local furor and understanding that it might not end well for them.

OP: Here's an update from Kansas regarding the soldier you mentioned who was arrested for "stalking" the Phelps clan...

Ryan Newell was RELEASED upon his own recognizance by a local judge - and, the Robert Dole VA Hospital [here in Wichita] was instrumental in obtaining his release, stating that his actions were likely the result of the severe injuries [he's a double amputee of the legs] he received in service to his country. This is a case of justice as it USED to be! Newell has rightly been showered with support from Kansans all across our state and the judge agreed. The only condition to his release? That he immediatly report to the VA hospital to begin counselling.

On a related note: After losing this legal skirmish, the Phelps clan announced they'd picket churches in Newell's hometown of Marion KS this Sunday. Last night, the Marion City Council held a community meeting [attended by 200 citizens] to organise how they'll react when the Phelps gang rolls into town... trust me: they're ready, willing and able to keep their little town free from the Phelps' insidious type of hatred.

BTW: Phelps' activities are funded by several church groups as rabid as his own... reportedly, ALOT of his money comes from a Denver-based group that owns a radio station.

I hear ya. I think what threw me off was the highlighted part. When you say "the church," and not "this church," or "Westboro Baptist," I took it to mean the Christian church in general. You've always seemed like a decent person, so my apologies for the confusion.

Well that certainly is good news! I hope he gets the help that he needs. And I hope that the "church" gets what's coming to them...

If it's any consolation to those reading this thread, for several years now here in Kansas several groups have been planning their own activities when Phelps finally dies.

But what happens at HIS funeral WON'T be a protest! I understand that an amusement company has already been contacted to set up their carnival near the cemetary to offer free rides to all comers. And, the cheering should effectively drown out the blasphemous prayers the Phelps family will offer up in his praise...

Westboro is rude and crude and I do not like their ways but the things they say are true.

I can't understand why someone hasn't approached dealing with them from a stalking approach.

They are the ultimate trolls.

They choose any funeral that will garner headlines.

It's not free speech if it's harassment, threatening and intimidation. It's a crime.
