I know diesel engines don't mind 3% kerosene because that is what we call in Australia alpine diesel. I also know you can mix it in higher ratios like 50/50 but diesel engines don't like it.

I use kerosene for lighting and cooking and it would be nice to be able to use it in the car sometimes if there is no diesel handy.

The diesel mechanics in town today said a mix of 1 part engine oil to 75 parts kerosene will work okay.

Yep, you need to bump the octane rating. Diesel and home heating fuel oil are the same here in the US it's just that fuel oil doesn't have the additives nor is it taxed like diesel. Adding the right ratio of motor oil will do the job, you could even use used oil in a pinch as long as it's filtered VERY well first.

From what I've heard, diesel engines run pretty good on diesel fuel, moran!!

something to do with compression ratio. You will have to change it and add your mechanic friend is correct.

Please understand that I store fuel. Sometimes many hundreds of litres just in case there is disruption to supply. It is good to have a fuel that has many possible uses. Diesel is smoky when used in a stove like this - [link to www.optimusstoves.com]

Diesel also destroys the generator with carbon deposits in pressure oil lamps like this one I use - [link to www.siamtakeang.com]

If you have a relatively old-school diesel engine, you can run it on corn oil or any other cheap veggie oil.
Lots of people here did that until they racked up the price of veg oil to stop it.

Re: What additive can I put into kerosene to run a diesel engine?
Last time I was in the US kerosene was hard to find and cost twice as much as diesel. Not the same in OZ?

Why not just store diesel?

If you want a mix for kerosene, I'd suggest 2-cycle oil rather than regular motor oil.

As I said... diesel is only good for one thing - running the car. Kerosene on the other hand can have many uses.

Imagine running out of kerosene and being left with hundreds of litres of diesel, a car, and nowhere to go because the roads are trashed by flooding, landslides and downed trees.

Re: What additive can I put into kerosene to run a diesel engine?
i ran a 2 litre french diesel car for over 5 years on kerosene without any additive or mixing with pump diesel. The lubrication talk is just an old wives tale. Kerosene is a lubricant and what exactly in a diesel fuel system do you need to lubricate, the fuel pump, injectors? Like i said i had no problems for over 5 years.

I do know there are diesel engines that can handle a wide variety of fuels. The worry with my engine is the possible expensive damage I have read can happen with the wrong fuel.

Re: What additive can I put into kerosene to run a diesel engine?
Basically, putting Kerosene in a diesel engine is equivalent to putting ethanol in gasoline. It lowers the BTU, thus burning colder and less efficient meaning worse fuel economy.

Fuel additives like Diesel Kleen with cetane booster will help significantly with lubricity, which the sulfur provided, will protect your fuel pump and injectors as well as keeping them clean.

Some of fuels that can be burned in a diesel engine:
Diesel #1
Diesel #2
Diesel #4
ULSD
Biodiesel
Kerosene
Home heating oil
Civil jet fuel (Jet A-1, Jet A, Jet B)
Military jet fuel(JP-4,JP-5,JP-8)
SVO (Straight Vegetable Oil)

Hope this helps!

yes, there is no difference between them except the gov. requires kerosene to have a red dye additive which will turn your exhaust reddish in color. a flag for the troops, it is illegal to use it in place of diesel and you will be fined to hell

Re: What additive can I put into kerosene to run a diesel engine?
KEROSENE

It can be used in conjunction with cutting oil as a thread cutting and reaming lubricant. When machining aluminium and its alloys, kerosene on its own is an excellent cutting lubricant.

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

if kerosene is used as a cutting lubricant, i see no reason why motor oil, 2 stroke oil or any other lubricant need to be added in order to keep you engine running well.

SO OP AS YOU CAN SEE, THE INFORMATION I HAVE POSTED (UNDER VARIOUS ID) SHOWS CLEARLY KEROSENE IS AN EXCELLENT LUBRICANT AND A DIESEL ENGINE CAN RUN ON IT FINE, THE ONLY PROBLEM BEING COLD STARTS.

OP I EVEN RAN A PETROL ENGINE ON KEROSENE ONCE, NOW THAT WASNT FUN AT ALL.
