So my unemployment ran out...
Like so many of you out there, my unemployment ran out recently. Unfortunately, my health has also taken a downturn this last few months and now I am honestly a little afraid that I will lose everything. My wife is also on unemployment, she has one more extension that just started. I am hoping I can find a low impact job that doesn't require much physical effort, but I imagine most of those jobs are already taken. I've looked and can't find much. I am considering doing some jewelry sales at the flea market on Saturdays, but that is dangerous because of the chance of theft.

So what do you guys suggest? I can only work about 20 hours a week due to health problems and cannot lift anything due to a herniated disc in my neck (C6-C7). I want to be productive and make a living and not be a burden to society, but I feel my options are limited. My skills are mainly sales and computer repair (minor, not networking). I feel for all of you out there in a similar situation. This is the hardest its ever been in our lifetimes. That doesn't mean we roll over and give up, though. I'm open to your ideas and suggestions...

if you do Jewelry why not get an ebay store front ?

I buy, fix and sell laptops on ebay. this time of year I make a KILLING. more than my 9-5. the Fed Ex dude has a key to my shed.

What you need to do tho is get a CPA and start an S type corp. ( seperate TAX ID ) and then you can seperate the business and taxes and what not. make it all laggit and crap... I dunno, thats why I hired him. I don't deal with that shit. I just fix laptops.

Actually, my wife and I have been doing that! We aren't doing too bad either. I just don't know if we can scale it up, but it is one of our main ways of income right now.

I'm sorry dude IMHO the solution was 2 years ago when you were probably in a lot better shape and was more active.

EI is the most damaging system to society you can ever create. It conditions people to not work, don't move, and become completely disengaged from society.

I think the MILITARY should run EI, and Welfare - Want benefits, go to Boot Camp. Come out super fit with life skills.. It would create an army of skilled and useful tradesmen for the world for little more than its initial cost...

My recommendation is to start walking and bicycling as much as you can now start getting in shape as best as you can. Employers want to hire active people.... Become one.

its not hard at all. u just learn to grow long finger nails and stock up on jewlers screw drivers... but they are a dime a dozen...

What I mainly do is scour the internet looking for broken laptops. Be it dead LCD, no back light, liquid damage, what ever. I get 2-3 of them with compatible parts and put one together. then I have left over parts and I do it again. and again. and again..

laptops are WAY cheaper to ship than PCs, but essentially the repair part is about the same. you get to know Dells tricks, and Toshibas tricks.. each one has a way to hide screws and come apart a certain way but theres not much to it really.

and I always format them with the actual windows Key on the bottom so its totally legal. you get 5 or 6 of them a month make a hundred a pop and thats my play money... u know ? nothing to it really. I do it part time, work full time, if you had that kind of time every day you could make a fortune. people dont pay to have broken laptops fixed. they go to wally world and buy a new one.

OP, I'm glad you have a secure (albeit humble) place to live. That's going to put you ahead of many others in your situation. My heart and prayers go out to you and all the millions in our country being impacted by this depression the country's in.

We are transitioning to a "new normal" that is destroying the life we knew. We will all have to realize that this is no longer the land of opportunity. Survival's going to be the name of the game. By the time this is over, all of us will be effected and many millions more will be unemployed.

Re: So my unemployment ran out...
What state are you in ?

I live in Jacksonville, FL

Idk. I've worked with 2 blown discs for a while now, lower back, in the restaurant business, it's never hindered me much at all from doing what I enjoy. Are you really in that much physical pain ? Computer repair is big where I live, NC, maybe FL isn't exactly booming these days...have you thought of moving ?

Well see my blown discs are in my neck and it makes my arms go into severe pain. It hurts right now to type, but I learn to switch hands and hang them low every 10-20 seconds, which seems to relieve them. I have thought about moving several times, but Jacksonville is pretty big and my family is here. I still might though.

"Since I entered politics, I have chiefly had men's views confided to me privately. Some of the biggest men in the U.S., in the field of commerce and manufacturing, are afraid of somebody, are afraid of something. They know that there is a power somewhere so organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive, that they had better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it." - Former President Woodrow Wilson

Re: So my unemployment ran out...
Speaking of ebay...aren't they going to start making more difficult for people to buy and sell without having to report their transactions to big brotha?

I thought I had read that somewhere...

thats why u register it all under a tax ID and hire a cpa. thats my point.

YES they are UP OUR ASS these days. and paypal is a royal pain in the ass too. you guys notice how us sellers are litterly BEGGING for positive feedback these days> thats because paypal holds the funds until A- the buyer leaves positive feedback or B- 45 days elapse. its to protect the buyers, but when we tie up a few grand in inventory and sit and wait a month in a half for pay back it kinda sucks..

theres allot to learn OP, allot to it.. BUT, you can profit from an ebay store front... And Activa auction check out software makes it sooooooo simple. i can build an auction and post it in under 30 seconds.
