SURVIVALISTS please Help!!!! Need advice on candles!
I was wondering if anyone had any better candles than a 3-pack of Coleman 9 hour emergency candles (at Walmart) for $5.95?

So they would be $2 each per 9 hours of light.

Any links for online candles would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Oil lamps work better, and the fuel is multi-use. Imo, candles are a waste.

Too expensive. You are paying for the name Coleman. Go to the dollar store and you can buy a 5 pack of emergency candles ( 6") for $1.00. They last a long time. Also, the average tea light lasts 4 hours...

also consider having at least some cyalume light sticks-- even the mini kind for fishing lures-- as they do not use up oxygen like a candle. just a thought.

Re: SURVIVALISTS please Help!!!! Need advice on candles!
I agree with ditching the name Coleman, buying the jar candles and investing in the Cyalume chemical-light sticks.

I have stored about a hundred tea lights from the dollar store but they do not burn as efficiently as the more expensive ones...still anything is better than a name brand.

Find a nice heavy glass holder for your tea lights to make them throw the light better and make them safer. Not good if you are all ready for disaster and you burn your abode down.

Especially in earthquake prone areas a jar candle will be much safer and less likely to start fires than a stick candle stuck to a jar lid or a candlestick.

The light sticks are the handiest and safest yet for a day or two of power outages. I always keep a handful of them ready for a big storm.

You might also think about getting some solar-powered lights for long term power outages, although in cloudy weather they don't recharge as well.

Re: SURVIVALISTS please Help!!!! Need advice on candles!
This might sound weird, but Novena candles are a great deal.
If you're not familiar with them, they are the religious candles used by Catholics. Primarily Latino Catholics.

They sell them at Walmart, they come in a tall glass container and will burn for days. I'd say at least 30hrs of burn time per jar.

They cost about $2. They do come in plain glass, if you are weirded out by having the "El Sagrado Corazon de Jesus" image on your candles. LOL

Different oils have different smoke points, some will produce soot easier, the length of the flame and wick are what make this happen, longer wick=more soot. They can be made out of any empty glass jar, some wire to hold the wick, and a wick, cotton is the preferred choice, it can be as simple as tearing a shirt into strips.

Get parrafin from a chemical supply firm. I use cat food cans, heavy cotton twine, and a weight to keep the wick down.

You can purchase single garden solar lights that throw a decent glow for about $3. The warmer colored solar tiki-torch style looks just like a pillar candle, they're about $12.

One thing that people do not know is that human or any type of animal sperm is actually flammable. Dip any wick or a piece of rope into sperm and light it, it will stay lit for several hours.

Re: SURVIVALISTS please Help!!!! Need advice on candles!
Archeologists have confirmed this flammable or combustible sperm story. Way back in the late 1960s and early 1970s there was alot of buzz about this story that some archeologists unearthed what was thought to be ancient caveman "fire stones" when they had the stones carbon dated and analysed, they found traces of human and gazelle sperm on the fire stones. This led them to believe that cavemen soaked the fire stones in sperm before striking them together. However not long after the story came out, mainstream archeologists came out and debunked it saying that there could be other explanations for the traces of sperm on the stones. So they actually conducted tests on live and dried sperm to see if it was combustible, and much to their surprise, it was!
