Caption: Lunar eclipse diagram, 16th century. The Earth is at centre, with the Sun at lower right. The Moon (upper left) is passing into the shadow of the Earth, seen as a lunar eclipse. The text labels are in Latin, including the words for Earth, South (at top), East and West. There are also numbers along the Sun's orbit of the Earth. This diagram is from the 1552 edition of Sphaera Mundi, by the French mathematician and cartographer Oronce Fine (1494-1555). Fine was a writer of many books popularising mathematics and astronomy. Sphaera Mundi (Sphere of the World) was an astronomy textbook with woodcut illustrations by Fine. It was first published in 1542.
