I don't have a microwave
What is this fascination with nuking stuff?

I don't get it.
Honestly... I don't.

I don't own a microwave. I never will. I have, but I never will again. Back in college I had a fascination with heating up anything that came within a plastic wrapper. Hot Pockets, Ramen, frozen pizza, you name it and I nuked it for 3 minutes.

But in the last few years, I've strayed away from it.

Lately, the conversation has come up a few times and everytime I tell people that I don't own a microwave, they look at you as if you had just told them that you don't know what Facebook is.

Granted, I've never used Twitter either, but that's a whole different conversation...

These people will look at me and honestly ask: Well, how do you cook your food?

Apparently, some people have never heard of skillets, grills, cast iron cookware, dutch ovens, conventional ovens and stoves. You'd swear that millions across America have never cooked a home cooked meal based on the sample size I've gathered across the states in the last few years. It just seems that now anything that takes effort cooking is a lost tradition within American culture. There was a conversation about chicken and there was some leftovers and someone said: Just put that in the microwave for 2 minutes and it tastes amazing.

I should have known better than to tell that person that I was going to just launch that thing in my cast iron skillet and do it there along with other stuff I could add to it.

"No microwave?"
"Nope, I don't own one."
"Why the hell not? It's so much easier! Wow. Never met anyone without a microwave."

Now, I'm sure a LOT of people here can come up with reasons why it's good to NOT own a microwave... like radiation or what not... but to be honest, I just like to make my own food traditionally. I make my own pizza from scratch. Put that sucker in the oven and make that crust crispy and nice and golden. Frozen pizza into a microwave ends up mushy, tasteless, full of preservatives and crap.

I get the convinience, but it almost seems like there are people out there that use a microwave for EVERYTHING. Other thing I've noticed... I seem to eat better since I don't use a microwave. I have a tendency to buy fresher food and support local produce and poultry farmers to get the freshest products and cook it myself. Are we really at a point where we need convinience for everything over better quality and healthier choices... or am I truly one of a kind by not having microwave... or Twitter?

I do not either

I admit I succumbed for a time but very short and I know how badly they leak radiation even when seals are intact

with a geiger counter one can see the truth readily

as it microwaves it flashes very high and then drops and cycles several times...3 feet minimum is NOT ENOUGH DISTANCE IN ANY WAY

I wonder how they even got it through here

Quite right have you ever seen what happens to a plant grown in water that had been microwaved?

It dies!

Even if it were "safe", I don't think I could trade in cast iron goodness of traditional baking for microwave convinience.

We don't eat TV dinners here so we don't use it much either. We do eat canned soup sometimes when we are in a hurry, and use it for that. Otherwise, we mostly use it to zap our tea if we let it get cold, heat up a slice of home-made bread, or melt butter for cooking. I could easily do without it. My son pops popcorn but the rest of us can't stand microwave corn and use the air-popper instead.

I stopped using the microwave for anything several months ago, and have not looked back. My family thought I was nuts to do it, and still do sometimes but I don't regret it. It was the best thing for my health I felt and do feel. I may not always be able to control what I eat per se, but how it's cooked I sure try to.

I love doing leftover pizza on a stovetop too, best thing in the world. I get the crust nice and crisp, it's awesome. A microwave can't beat that. Things taste different in a micro really, and you gotta watch how long you warm things there, since some spots warm up faster then others. Stove works just fine for me.

I hear you about using it for everything too, at home here we have a coffee maker in the kitchen, but we hardly ever use it in lieu of the micro. What's the point of having the thing if you won't use it you know?

Always remember, ultimately, to never follow any person's belief. Your relationship with God is between you and God.

Whenever I heat up soup, I just use a smaller pot.
I've done the same with tea.

My grandmother showed me how to make real green tea in a small pot and it's far better... but I can see how it can be convinient for something like that though.

In the event of an alien invasion you'll want to modify your microwave and use it as a weapon.

Bring microwave outside and plug into extension cord.

Break glass on door

Set power level to maximum and engage start.

Point microwave at invading forces and watch them drop.

Your welcome!

I got rid of mine a few years ago. And got a food dehydrator and an air popper instead.

Why would I spend all this time making a healthy, delicious meal, just to zap all the nutrients and enzymes out of it?

Also microwave popcorn gives you lung cancer, fyi.
