A thought before I go to bed: The Oar Fish occured first because they are on the top of the food chain. Famines and Toxic deaths often hit the top of the food chain first because they depend on the small fish like bunk, sardines, drum fish and carp. If these fish dwindle or have unusual amounts of toxins, it will starve predators or build up in their systems respectively.

I'm in Northwest Arkansas and just heard a report on NPR (01.04.2011)with Steve Ensky (sp?). I believe the gentleman he was interviewing was with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. This man spoke both about the dead birds and fish in the Ozarks area and stated that he thought the "birds got scared"! And yes I am unfortunately being quite serious, however I cannot stop laughing!

So apparently (according to officials) 1,000's of blackbirds got scared and fell out of the sky? Perhaps somebody out there can make sense of this. Personally I think the AGFC might want to look into the issue a bit further.

Could the dead fish be from the unusual cold weather or drought around the world? Fish are very sensitive to water temperature, so maybe Global Cooling [ie the New Ice Age], is effecting water temps which is killing the fish???

There was a massive fish kill along the Amazon river last summer [So.America's winter] due to extremely cold weather that cooled water temperature to the point that millions of fish died.
"Over 1 million fish and thousands of alligators, turtles, dolphins and other river wildlife are floating dead in numerous Bolivian rivers in the three eastern/southern departments of Santa Cruz, Beni and Tarija. The extreme cold front that hit Bolivia in mid-July caused water temperatures to dip below the minimum temperatures river life can tolerate. As a consequence, rivers, lakes, lagoons and fisheries are brimming with decomposing fish and other creatures."

I used to work at a factory in IL. It's actually where your Winchester Shot Gun Shells are made.
Every winter, they'd send plant department people up to the higher open spaces of the plant WHERE pigeons would gather for the winter and lay down poisoned bird seed.
Guess what else would eat the bird seed? Black birds and starlings.
Pigeons, Starlings and blackbirds will eat the same poison bird seed that pigeons do because they're wintering in the same warm(er) spaces as the pigeons.
After the poison bird seed was laid down, all the pigeons and black birds would take flight and mysteriously circle and ONE by one, they'd fall out of the sky dead. We'd have hundreds of MOSTLY pigeons dead all over the property for weeks.
I know farmers lay it down as well...to kill the starlings and black birds. Remember that Ark. is the duck hunting capital of the USA. Professional hunters are trying to attract ducks and geese, NOT red wing black birds to their fields for hunting.
So, more than likely, this is a poisoning issue. The fish and game is NOT going to release this information because they don' want animal rights people messing up their hunting seasons. So, like the factory where I worked, they're keeping it hush, hush.
It's poisoning.

Great job OP and everybody else who contributes. This is really curious...I was wondering myself what could cause birds drop out of the sky dead, and so many dead fish washing ashore all over. Yes, this happened before, but I never heard it in such masses, something's not right.

HAS ANYONE FOUND DEAD FOXES SQUIRRELS ECT if this spreads to other animals could be bubonic plague sheep ect history shows in cold winters when things were autier plague broke out just a thought some guy said men in bio suits in his area
