i'd like to get a recurve myself

curious what makes you want a compound?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 664301

Really? Once you pull past the break, you are only holding a fraction of the draw weight...

OP, get a cross bow...it's more like a rifle than a bow...

I bought an Excalibur, it's kick ass!

And for the record I pull a 110lb Long bow so shut the fuck up.

I have a Bear compound bow, and it blows.

This is the best shooter I have: [link to www.tomahawkbows.com]

Nice! I'm a Longbow man myself.

The advantage of a compound bow is one can draw it back and hold it back for a few minutes. A longbow cannot be held back long enough while one waits for the best possible shot at one's target.

If I was going to war against an enemy who was using bows and arrows, I would want a longbow. But for hunting, a compound bow.

I don't shoot critters though.I shoot to the mark.
 Quoting: Richard Eldritch

I used to shoot a longbow, thats how I learned to shoot without really taking exact aim, more by instinct. But later on, when one hunts big game like deer or elk, one needs a compound. Drawing back spooks the animals too much, one has to draw before they get too close, and hold the arrow back till they get into position to arrow them humanely.
Some people can hunt with a longbow, but the aniimals I hunt are way too aware and spook easily for me to use a longbow, because they hear and see me draw back and are gone.

Each bow type has its good and bad points.

I have this one from PSE ,65 pound draw, shoots nice.
[link to www.pse-archery.com]

Remember, those nice 85 pound draws... you have to pull all that back. I think most states, killing draw is 45lbs. Bow hunting is about skill, not farthest shots. A well placed shot with a 45pound browning using good tracking is more effective than huffing and puffing trying to draw a heavy string on a distance shot (or anyshot for that matter) I'd go to an archery shop, they'll let you mess with their stuff.

My dad has a few compounds. Of the 3 he has, this is the one I fancied most. A tad pricey but still not bad... [link to mathewsinc.com]
 Quoting: C21H30O2

mathews is definately top of the line. They also make a price point line called Mission that is about half the price of Mathews, but still has the quality. They also have the best warranty out there. Warranty for life for the original owner. Most others are a limited warranty, for instance, when they discontinue that particular model, they no longer make warranty parts for it.

I would suggest looking at the Venture (Missionarchery.com)
retails for $499...sweet bow.

True, but Deer can't duck under these.

My first bow hunt was with a Bear Whitetail 2 (197 fps) and when I released, the deer shot out all four legs and hit the ground and the arrow went over it.

I swore after that it would never happen again. The next weekend I went out and bought a Mathew's ZMAX set for 70lbs and 320fps. Have not had a problem since.

Now I'm up to 360 fps with a 29" draw. Overkill yes....I can always fall back on my Zmax if I have shoulder issues.
