Re: COMPOUND BOW'S, HELP PLEASE.........
and BTW.....you don't need an 85# bow....thats just macho crap that will tear up your shoulders as you get older.
These bows today are 320 plus fps..(feet per second)...it is more than enough to harvest anything in North America...

The point was about compound bows pulling through the 85lb mark till they rest at 45lb. Shooting with a longbow to the Mark is about trying out OLD War Bow strengths, not about machismo.
 Quoting: Richard Eldritch

well, now your talking about let off. Most these new bows are 80% let off. So, you saying you pull a 85# long bow, that has no let off?

I pull a 110 lb long bow there is no let off. It's an artillary weapon really, so no need to hold; just stretch and shoot.

Re: COMPOUND BOW'S, HELP PLEASE.........
I have this one from PSE ,65 pound draw, shoots nice.
[link to www.pse-archery.com]

Remember, those nice 85 pound draws... you have to pull all that back. I think most states, killing draw is 45lbs. Bow hunting is about skill, not farthest shots. A well placed shot with a 45pound browning using good tracking is more effective than huffing and puffing trying to draw a heavy string on a distance shot (or anyshot for that matter) I'd go to an archery shop, they'll let you mess with their stuff.
 Quoting: Brutalsun

pse..pull shoot explode
na there ok just stuffing with you.
i agree i think 60 pound is the best for someone who is new to the sport,as most ppl can pull it back with out getting the shakes.
it is allso the higest poundage you can use in aba target archery{not 3daa ect} and a well placed shot will drop all most anything.

True, but Deer can't duck under these.

My first bow hunt was with a Bear Whitetail 2 (197 fps) and when I released, the deer shot out all four legs and hit the ground and the arrow went over it.

I swore after that it would never happen again. The next weekend I went out and bought a Mathew's ZMAX set for 70lbs and 320fps. Have not had a problem since.

Now I'm up to 360 fps with a 29" draw. Overkill yes....I can always fall back on my Zmax if I have shoulder issues.
 Quoting: FatalWishes

Zmax...still excellent bow:-)

owner of two reezen 6.5, MQ1, and a prestige....I only shoot 40# and never had a problem...complete pass throughs at max distance of 30 yards....and I mostly harvest white tail at 20 yards and less. Arrow in flight is what they hear, and the further you try to shoot, the more time a white tail has to react to that arrow in flight. Most guys claim they jump the string, this is not true, if you have ever seen a slow motion video, you will see the eyes tracking that arrow in flight.

Re: COMPOUND BOW'S, HELP PLEASE.........
For small game hunting, a 27# draw recurve is perfect, for larger game 55# or 65#. Damon Howatt, PSE, Ben Pearson are excellent user bows. PSE makes a takedown which is quite nice. Get 2 sets of limbs and you have a great hunting solution.

Compound bow offers greater precision, primarily because of the mechanical advantage, yet they are I found, slow for repetitive shooting. Great to be able to mount all sorts of fancy flipper arrow rests, sights, stabilizers etc that can promote great repetitive precision if shooting at stationary targets. Yet, they are heavy, not practical to carry dissembled, and bulky in the woods.

Kid or beginner type fiberglass bows are also worth having. We own one compound of 65# draw, 65 & 55 takedowns, 27 & 45 recurves, plus about 4 entry level light pull bows.

A 65# pull will deliver an aluminum shaft Easton arrow with 125gr field/practice point through 1/2" plywood from 30yds all day long. Unless you are going to hunt saltwater crocodile with your bow, 55 pound pull should be all you might ever need in Australia.

A good quiver, plenty of arrows, and maintenance gear with a few spare bowstrings should be all the accessories you might need. A pin sight is a great field accuracy aid. Good shooting glove and wrist guard, of course; plus a bow stringer.

For hunting, the right camouflage clothing or well concealed blind will do wonders. Have had deer within petting range of my hand on couple of occasions. Might look into flu-flu vaned arrows for close range bird shooting and also a reel setup if you might use your bow to take fish. Learn to fletch and straighten your arrows and you will have a great and reliable game gathering tool.

This is good advise....they will properly measure you for draw....they will also spine your arrows correctly for the poundage you pull. At a pro shop, you will get a custom build right, the first time. You will also get proper instructions on form. etc...overall, you will be most successful if you buy from a pro- shop.
