Nirvana was great but they never really got a chance to reach their "pinnacle", so to speak. I think if Kurt had lived longer, they would have totally dominated the entire 1990's and would still be big today.

NIN is also a good band but not that many people listen to heavy music compared to pop music. Also, Pretty Hate Machine is an album that most people who may like NIN but aren't rabid about them probably have never even heard of. I think a lot of people know NIN from their soundtrack work and the few songs they've gotten on the radio.

Michael Jackson was an incredibly popular entertainer when he was just a child and was world famous by the time he was a teenager, with his family band, the Jackson 5.

And as much as I like Nirvana, NIN, and many other groups, Michael blew every single one of them away in terms of raw talent. The guy wrote some of the most memorable songs in music history and worked his ass off for decades to get where he was. Thriller is still selling because it kicks ass and there are constantly new generations of people discovering his music.
