Everyone loved his videos, Billy Jean, Thriller, it was all over radio...Pop for the masses. It reached so many more ppl than music could before. His worldwide audience was huge I get my energy from my inner chi. I be in outer space, but I got inner peace. - Lupe |

I think if Kurt had lived longer, they would have totally dominated the entire 1990's and would still be big today. NIN is also a good band but not that many people listen to heavy music compared to pop music. Also, Pretty Hate Machine is an album that most people who may like NIN but aren't rabid about them probably have never even heard of. I think a lot of people know NIN from their soundtrack work and the few songs they've gotten on the radio. Michael Jackson was an incredibly popular entertainer when he was just a child and was world famous by the time he was a teenager, with his family band, the Jackson 5. And as much as I like Nirvana, NIN, and many other groups, Michael blew every single one of them away in terms of raw talent. The guy wrote some of the most memorable songs in music history and worked his ass off for decades to get where he was. Thriller is still selling because it kicks ass and there are constantly new generations of people discovering his music. |

Nirvana only had 3 albums. very provokative but the videos weren't ground breaking at all. MJ truthfully had good music just like them but he also danced and came up with innovative (keyword innovativ) videos.... At a time when videos were farely new and tv was mainstream his music maximized. MJ is still to this day played as a staple in clubs all across the world. Nirvana was a movement nonetheless that just kind of got swollowed by the beast in the 90s when music was getting highjacked. MJ's music transcended music. He went into anthropology and giving a fuck about people who weren't on his continent. Not saying Kurt didnt but MJ was a mtfkin ambassador. I feel your pain but going after the king of pop (keyword pop as in popular) music isnt the right path to a fruitful discussion about why nirvana and nine inch nails arent where they should... |

MJ just had wayyyyy more time on the playing field. i swear I love Nirvana to death but they didnt get to transcend the grundge scene. They made a nice step bc they were selected to do an MTV Unplugged session which only CLASS A/Groundbreaking artist get to do. Being selected to do an MTV Unplugged is a very big deal |

Quoting: sumarianIt's a masses thing I suppose... ![]() How about this. "Black" people are not the minority like everyone thinks. We (yes i said we) are very into MJ and generally love all his music. We supported the shit out of him since he was a little kid singing with Jackson 5. I done bought vinyl copies of his albums in the 80s only to buy the same copies in CD version in the 90s and again post 2000. (all due to loss, damage of course) Now take my perspective or the way I bought his albums and amplify that number. Then add the numbers of non-blacks that bought his music in the us...then outside the us. Then add on all the world DJs that spin Off the Wall.... you will never hear Nirvana in a dance club. That says alot right there if you can understand the logic. |

But, every deal made with the devil goes wrong. He'll give you what you want, but he didn't say for how long, he's shady like that. Mike had about 3 years when he was truly on top. 83-86 After that he starts turning white, and looking like Janet/Diana Ross. He had so much soul when he sang as a kid but after Thriller? It was all nasal with grunts and dah dah do eh tay...Shamon. He turned into a little crotch grabbin demon. The devil gave him what he wanted though.
