I'm from Milwaukee, Wisconsin - the most segregated (and drunkest) city in the USA One Sunday morning many years ago while living on the Northside of Chicago, a friend and I decided to ease our hangovers with some hair of the dog. We drove around and all the bars were closed. It was 10 AM on a Sunday, finally we found a German bar with it's doors open. In fact it was almost busy with maybe 10 or so old Germans drinking beer. He carded us. I was OK. My buddy was Irish and looked it and had an Irish name. The old German started yelling at him about how the Irish took over Chicago and closed down the German bars and are always working to destroy the German culture in Chicago. Then he looked at me and said, "You can stay and drink with us, your friend has to go." We both left. The point being, Chicago, like Milwaukee, is very segregated on a neighborhood level, and not just on racial lines rather mostly on ancestral lines. It was damn hot, but it was cool as being a Westerner I was walking along the shoreline of one of America's Great Lakes, Lake Michigan. The Polish were having a festival & you could get the best mid west dogs ever. But at one spot these guys were fishing off the shore and they would hook into these huge goldfish or groupers. I don't know, like they were 20 lbs or more, 2ft or more long. They said it was against the law to throw them back so they would just hang them on the fence and yes there was way more than a few hanging there rotting away. Would you care to comment on any of this activity. we're here to go |
