There is no physical "pole shift." (Update: There is still no physical "pole shift.")
I'd been planning on precisely and directly measuring the current location of the earth's axis of rotation, the north celestial pole, for a few days but had to wait for the weather to improve. I finally got my chance last night. Here are the results.

I used an 8" SCT telescope, aimed it at the north celestial pole, shut the tracking system off, and then ran an exposure for about 20 minutes. This produced the familiar circular "star trails" photo one gets when doing a long exposure while aimed at a celestial pole, but at a much higher angular resolution than you could get with a regular camera lens. In fact, it was so high in resolution that Polaris wasn't even in the same field of view, the only stars present were far too dim to be seen by eye and were all within about 30 arcminutes of the north celestial pole.

I measured from the star USNO-A2 1725-00691811. Its J2000 coordinates are:
21h 23m 00.84s +89d 52' 49.8"
Precessed to 2011.02 (last night), the coordinates would have been:
19h 30m 19.50s +89d 55' 05.8"
Therefore the star should have been 294.2 arcseconds from the north celestial pole.

My camera and telescope combination produce an angular resolution of 1.88 arcseconds per pixel when the images are scaled down to 1024 resolution:
[link to flickr.com]
I measured USNO-A2 1725-00691811 to be 156.9 pixels from the NCP in the image I took last night:
[link to i319.photobucket.com]
Original image here:
[link to i319.photobucket.com]
That corresponds to a distance of 294.972 arcseconds from the NCP, less than an arcsecond from the expected value and well within the resolution of the image itself.

There is only one possible conclusion; the north celestial pole and axis of the earth's rotation is right where it should be to within an arcsecond of its expected value. Precession and milliarcsecond scale shifts due to things like earthquakes and the Chandler wobble notwithstanding, there is no "physical pole shift."

If the star had moved the measurement wouldn't add up. The odds that the star AND our pole moved in the same direction by the same amount are staggeringly low, but even that possibility was ruled out as I also took the liberty of measuring from the center point of the image (measured astrometrically to be 03h 21m 51.54s +89d 58' 47.9") and the result agreed perfectly with the measurement from the star itself.

It's simply a video from msnbc on the Tampa Airport regarding them having to make runway adjustments due to the magnetic shift in the pole. Seems that is a pretty "physical" effect. I doubt they are making all these physical adjustments for the fun of it. I'm curious what your thoughts are on this.

Below is similar article from NPR (kind of the same material as in the msnbc video)

[link to www.npr.org]

Magnetic North Pole Switch Has Airport Scrambling

MICHELE NORRIS, host:

You can't feel it, but the Earth's magnetic North Pole is moving away from its home in Canada's far north. The implications of this are being felt at some airports which align their runways to the points on a compass.

As Steve Newborn of member station WUSF reports, the move has actually shut down a runway far to the south in Tampa.

STEVE NEWBORN: The magnetic North Pole is not a fixed object. It's continually moving. It's actually racing from Canada to Siberia and that has officials at Tampa International Airport a little busy today.

Mr. SCOTT LOPER (Tampa International Airport): Over 100 sign panels need to be changed, 40 signs, surface-painted signs, a lot of work going on.

NEWBORN: That's Scott Loper at Tampa's airport. They've had to shut down their main runway for a week to repaint the signs that help pilots navigate around the airport.

Actually it's a magnetic shift, which is exactly why I specified "physical pole shift" in the title and in the thread. Physical pole shift means something completely different on GLP, though some physical pole shift believers seem to try to use the magnetic shift as evidence of a physical shift.

Re: There is no physical "pole shift." (Update: There is still no physical "pole shift.")
Most people don't know the difference between a magnetic pole shift and a physical pole shift.

I think this is what generates the confusion and panic.

Magnetic pole shift - common phenomena occuring historically, the pole has wandered in location for awhile. Requires some realligning and adjustments to magnetic north. They re-calibrate critical infrastructure with compasses and associated equipment where precise navigation is required.

Physical pole shift - if occuring rapidly then TEOWATKI, if gradually then would create many problems with the climate, icepacks, sealevels, crops, extinctions, biomes etc. Most of the science on this shows it has not happened for a very long time, if ever.

A PHYSICAL pole shift would mean that the earth itself would do a 180 degree spin. The south hemisphere would become the north hemisphere and vice versa...

So... do you realize what you are saying?

No one here is talking about a physical shift, only magnetic.

Please think before you post threads. Thank you.

Re: There is no physical "pole shift." (Update: There is still no physical "pole shift.")
I don't think there is a physical pole shift either.

I think a magnetic poleshift brings the 'ascenders' theory far closer to reality than the physical poleshift theory.

The only time things like that happen are when the earth is impacted by a huge object, or a supervolcano occurs.

Other than that, the crust/etc. can spin around the core all it wants... the thing that causes surface 'reshaping' is lava coming up through cracks.

I don't think the change is what a lot of people think it will be.

Of course not.
The molten core is not ONE BIG MAGNET with one north and one south pole.
The molten core is made of iron molecules, each molecule having a north and south pole.
If the earth's magnetic field flips, the molecules in the core will flip in place, NOT rush to the opposite end of the earth.

Hmmm now that you mention it... what if our poles had switched in the past? What if the north was the south and so on?

This could explain why the penguins have been so confused all this time and not been able to fly. The change in the magnetosphere in the past must have threw them off.

So now our magnetic poles will return back to normal and penguins will begin to fly again. Sit back and watch!

10000000% spot on. This cunt Astroturf is a trolling shill arsewank lowlife. I have been looking at all the threads recently and no one said actual pole shift. EVERYONE on GLP was talking magnetic pole shift.

Lo and behold this weasel comes in out of the blue and starts a thread to make it look as if everyone on GLP is talking about the earth flipping upside down.

With this one sneaky weasely act this Astronut has shown himself to be a shifty little cunt.

BUMP THIS IF YOU AGREE THAT ASTRONUT IS A SHIFTY LITTLE CUNT WHO HAS JUST BEING CAUGHT TRYING TO PULL A SEANKY TROLL TO DISCREDIT EVERYONE ON GLP BECAUSE HE CAN'T STOMACH THE FACT THAT SOMETHING INCREDIBLE IS HAPPENING AND HE CAN'T DEBUNK IT AND HE SHOWED HIS TRUE COLOURS FOR ALL TO SEE. CLOSED MINDED SHIFTY LITTLE CUNT.
