A “Hole Punch” cloud is a non-technical name given to a cloud formed from an aircraft dissipation hole or trail. They are also called "Punch Hole" clouds. Rather than extending as a line, Hole Punch clouds appear as a circular or oval hole in a deck or thin layer of supercooled water clouds. They are not uncommon where jet flight paths intersect altocumulus layers. What is uncommon is when they form in a perfect circle that persists for a length of time to be widely observed.


On December 11, 2003 that’s exactly what happened along the central Gulf Coast. A remarkably circular and persistent Hole Punch cloud formed over Mobile, Alabama at lunchtime. Numerous curious people photographed it. The event was so much a topic of conversation that it was the top local news story of the day.

It is believed that a disruption in the stability of the cloud layer, such as that caused by a passing jet, may induce the domino process of evaporation which creates the hole. Such clouds are not unique to one geographic area and have been photographed from the United States to Russia.

Because of their rarity and unusual appearance, fallstreak holes are often mistaken for or attributed to unidentified flying objects.

Explanation: What could create a huge hole in the clouds? Such a hole, likely hundreds of meters across, was photographed last month from a driveway near Mobile, Alabama, USA. Very unusual to see, hole-punch clouds like this are still the topic of meteorological speculation. A leading hypothesis holds that the hole-punch cloud is caused by falling ice-crystals. The ice-crystals could originate in a higher cloud or be facilitated by a passing airplane exhaust. If the air has just the right temperature and moisture content, the falling crystals will absorb water from the air and grow. For this to happen, the water must be so cold that all it needs is a surface to freeze on. The moisture lost from the air increases the evaporation rate from the cloud water droplets so they dissipate to form the hole. The now heavier ice crystals continue to fall and form the more tenuous wispy cloud-like virga seen inside and just below the hole. During the afternoon of November 15, 2006, an unusual cloud formation was seen across central Wisconsin. Known as "hole punch clouds," the holes develop as ice crystals above the main cloud layer fall through the clouds, causing the super-cooled water droplets to evaporate. The result is a circular form void of clouds, with a mass of crystals in the center.

yeah but its like all hollywood movies, they only go for the americans not the others, maybe a ship in moscow and one in bejing, but they are like the volvo 240´s ships, old once with some shaggyass aliens that are really grumpy and are only there for the noodles and vodka....

but in US they use hightech laserguided analprobes to probe you all and mutate crabs so it can breed in ur ass.... thats the thing thats going to happen.

Haha, some of the possible explanations for this phenomena really make me chuckle.

Occams Razor goes completely out the window in favour of "perfect condition" scenarios. You can almost hear their brains working overtime to think of something other than UFOs to pin this on.

There is no evidence of any Scientist admitting anything. The article that did mention UFOs was from the Sun, a tabloid. And the person that did mention them was a so called UFO expert.

And by posting further snippets of information every 10 minutes is not going to add any veracity your fallaciousness.

Thank you I welcome all cloud posts since according to sources they are popular where there are many vector intersections. But this would actually be above airports in the US and they form where there isn't high traffic adding a new mystery, especially when they are of massive size. But remember all sources confirm they are not natural phenomena working alone but flying objects

Dont you think it extremeley CONVENIENT that in the last few years we have catalogued more phenomena that they turn up with lame ass theories for and yet none of these things had been seen before
so why hadnt they been seen in the last several hundred years

also weird that weve been using the jet engine for 81 years for flight and until the last 7/8 years or so this phenomena has never been seen before (that i know of)

the photo is taken from the beach... Can someone sit on a chair all night on that beach to see if any dead fish or crap would float around and wash up..

Considered a mystery for many years, punch hole clouds appear on rare occasions all over the world, sometimes attracting widespread attention, e.g., the famous Moscow UFO cloud of 2009. Recently meteorologists have penetrated the mystery: punch holes form when airplanes fly through thin layers of high altitude clouds. If water droplets in the cloud are supercooled (below freezing but still liquid), they can suddenly turn to snow when shocked by the passage of the plane. This mini-snowstorm occurs over a circular area much wider than the airplane itself.

Not all flights through banks of clouds will produce snow. According to Wired Magazine, only about 7.8 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered with clouds at the right elevation for supercooled droplets to form. Because jet aircraft don’t generally cruise at those altitudes, they may only form hole-punch clouds when they take off or land.

I love working with computers, I find a problem and try to recreate it so that it is easier to fix next time.

If indeed the punch holes are created by terrestrial aircraft passing through them, then is should be absolutely no problem at all recreating the scenario, in a proper scientific manner...

Or is it just swamp gas again.....

Great info in this thread. Debunkers often say that hole punch clouds are just normal but, apparently, it's the short lived ones that are normal and scientists are still puzzled by them. So, again, we don't know what some claim we know. Love it! :)
