TUNIS, Tunisia - Authorities struggled to contain escalating unrest in Tunisia on Tuesday as labour and human-rights activists said as many as 50 people had been killed in protests against unemployment.

The government said only 21 people had died in the three days of violence however and challenged critics to prove the higher toll.

As the United States said it was "deeply concerned" by reports that authorities had used excessive force against protesters, police broke up fresh demonstrations by Tunisian intellectuals aimed at condemning the crackdown.

"Our numbers say there are 21 dead," Communications Minister Samir Laabidi told a news conference, denying the reports of a higher death toll.

"Those who have spoken of 40 or 50 dead should produce a list of names," he said.

Officials had previously given a toll of 18 dead.

"We regret the deaths and sympathise with the families," Laabidi said.

"All peaceful demonstrations are tolerated, logical and understandable," he said, adding however that "violence threatening security and stability" crossed a "red line".

"Police never fired on protesters, these deaths occurred during attacks and acts of vandalism against public buildings, police stations or schools," he said, accusing "Islamic and left-wing extremists" of manipulating protesters

That video was terrible. How awful that when a government mows down 18+ of its own people we are just "deeply concerened"? We Should vehemently oppose such action and swear to undermine the current government if it can't find another way to solve its problems.

You know when the rich people (see all these multibillioners and their multinational companies or the banksters) have leeched all the wealth created by the poor people (all of us who are working for some dollars or euros or whatever FIAT money per day), they bring war in order to restart the failed economies, but at this time they are getting more and more richer and the poor more and more poorer. I wouldn't exclude a new World War when observing the ongoing currency wars between the dollar, euro and yuan that it is leading into instability all of the economies of the world.

Troops deployed in Tunis early Wednesday after rioting spread into the Tunisian capital’s suburbs the night before, following a weekend of deadly violence in a wave of protests over unemployment.

Army units took up positions at major intersections and at the entrance to the Cite Ettadhamen quarter where the clashes took place late Tuesday, AFP reported.

I visited Tunisia three years ago, I can say from personal experiance, this country is very heavaly controlled by government and police. You walk into a market and you can guarntee to see a large picture of there so called hero president Zine El Abadeen Banali, he's been in power since the 1990, he's a murdering, injustice, communist, who has his people brainwashed to a T. Human rights record is something to be put in line with the chinise. Noting is reported in western media about the going on's in Tunisia. There is a massive problem in this country that most in wealthy Europe simply are not aware of, and frankly don't care. This is the world we live in after all, isin it......

Intuition suggests this is a False Flag operation, tied to Wikileaks supporters recently defacing Tunisian government websites, probably from Rothschildlandia, visa vis the M.O. indicates the same thing happening in Zimbabwe.
