I got told to work overtime, off the clock to keep my job, WTF?
Recently I broke my finger and was put out of work by the emergency room for 3 days. Unfortunately, those days coincided with my bosses vacation time and I knew she was not happy since she could not find coverage and had to come back to work early. My boss has had it out for me for a while since it's apparent I know more than her. I trained her for her job after my pevious manager quit and they refused to promote me.

I come back to work on Friday last week, things seem good and she closes her door for a bit. Then tells me our regional manager would be there next week for some auditing at the office. I knew she was bullshitting and that she was coming to write me up for something.

So, today, she's at the office all day, and at the end of the day they call me in. They are writing me up for forgetting to enter 2 items into our system, and that it's a final write up. I didn't have time to enter those things before I left, and totally intended on being there the following day. I went to the ER later that night, not thinking that I would seriously be put out of work for 3 days.

I had write up 1 a year ago for violating a new company policy that I didn't even know existed yet. No one did, actually..They put out a memo on it 3 days after my write up.

My regional then has the audacity to tell me "Since overtime is not approved for the foreseeable future, if you can't get your work finished in the 8 hours, regardless of how busy you are with other things that come up, it would be in your best interest to clock out and take how ever long it takes to finish your work, its your job. I know you need it..."

WTF??? I signed the write up, because I knew that they would find a way to fire me if I didn't. I can't afford to be without my job, and the market is so hard here that I would have a hard time finding another job and also would need to move and I can't. I don't know what to do :(

Doesn't sound like a fun situation at all but usually with assholes like that if you show them they can push you around they'll continue to do so...unfortunately.

Make sure you fill out an incident report when you suffer this "injury" while working without pay, too.

Document. Document. Document.

Hard to disprove you were on the job (unpaid) when an injury report and documentation from a medical provider exist.

I'm sure you realize it is illegal for you to work off the clock. And since the manager made a verbal statement that no one else witnessed, it's your word against hers. You could make a report to the Dept of Labor, but risk losing your job as a form of retribution. I'd say you have a potential lawsuit, if you can prove this is going on. If I were you, I'd probably start looking elsewhere for work. Is there a union? Maybe they could help.

This is the reality, they know there are millions of people out of work and think they can do whatever they want. You can report it (in writing) to the local Department of Labor and then if they fire you for it maybe you can get unemployment or better yet a lawsuit. But you won't get anything if it's a small company.

Play along now but collect some dirt on your boss under the radar and take it to the owners.

My boss was treating me the same way. I stuck a tape recorder in her office and recorded all the shit she talked on the owner and then showed the owner. Her ass was out of there before you could say "Payback is a bitch".

If your state or the federal government requires you to be paid (e.g., time-and-a-half) for overtime, your management's "hint" is extremely illegal. I suggest you do your best to blow the whistle on their crime.

If you are considered an "exempt" (salaried or management) employee, you're out of luck. Plenty of salaried employees work tons of overtime without pay, unfortunately.

they are already training a whole generation of kids in another third world country to do the jobs once the indians get too much money

so in 50 years, they will relocate and outsource these jobs from indians to some other third world cesspool because they will gladly work for slave wages

once the indians working now demand for higher wages and start demanding more rights, it will happen
