How many times did this place flood before all those people moved in?

Every few years there is a flood, that's why most houses are built off the ground.

Are they built on stilts like they are in Thailand, etc.?

Thanks for sharing though - very innovated way of showing the damage.

Interesting photos!

The high grounds escaped the flood, and many are just down the road from the affected areas.

Only the river beds and lakes, the same happened in the 70's, people just cleaned up and carried on, granted there are many more now and a lot of houses were built lower because the dam was to mitigate flooding.

That's a great way to show the impact.

Many will hate this, but it seems that - like parts of New Orleans - certain parts of Queensland shouldn't be rebuilt.

Nature has a way of telling people when they should move on and out of its way.

There hasnt been a flood this bad for 34 years.. and before that it was in the 1890's.. people forget.. they shouldnt.. same with victoria now, worst flood in 100 years.. but that is mother nature.. its just like the next ice age, people will be screaming and carrying on, but its nature.. we live on a live planet, we cant stop it, we need to live with it and know its coming.. thats just common sense..

Overhead shots are great.

Google finally updated our area after Hurricane Ike, and we found our shed!

You know, they call these places FLOODPLAINS for a reason.
Yet people insist on building structures there rather than on higher ground, and regularly they get into trouble.

Re: Queensland floods, high res before and after photos
There is something very fundemental you need to understand about this.

This is why I don't live near a creek or stream.

Think about what the area looked like 20 years ago. Now think about all the new construction that has happened upstream. All the new roads and shopping malls and housing develpoments. These all took away precious water holding dirt and grass and woods. It's all pavement. There is nothing to hold the water.

The flood plains are changing EVERY yrea because of this. And they need to update the flood plain maps EVERY year. They aren't.

So that means every year added some more water that's available to come down the stream raising the water level higher than the year before in a major rain event.

WAKE UP. Sure I would love to live beside a nice babbling brook.., So peaceful and beautiful. SO DEADLY...

If you want to keep cleaning up year after year. Stay there. If not move.

I have seen it in neighborhoods all around me. EVERY year the flooding gets a little worse.

It's not rocket science. Drive up the creek and look at the new construction. You have to go miles up the creek. To the beginning. Then do it again the following year. All the new construction between the water source and your house will be adding water that is coming your way. That much more water is going to keep coming down stream. It's only going to get worse EVERY year unless they STOP all the upstream construction. What's the chances of that?

Same here with Hurricane Ike. 100 yrs ago people said. "Wow that is a once in a life time event. It will never happen again." So over the years people forget or don't believe it will happen again."

I read somewhere, that the Aborigines had been moving inland, and to higher grounds for years. Anyone have any info about that, I would like to refresh my memory.

I wonder if the Aborigines, have some knowledge, in their legends about the end times, like the Mayans?

That and the new "flood mitigating" dam made everybody too complacent, perhaps they will learn and rebuild a bit further up but I doubt it. Everyone likes the green lush look and wants to have that "ideal" waterfront property.

Re: Queensland floods, high res before and after photos
I agree with parts of these flood areas not being built on again.. they should be parkland.. these people cant even get flood insurance because its on a floodplain.. I am only renting, however i choose very wisely when it comes to where i live, im on bedrock, no landslip, im on the top of the hill, not the bottom lol.. i am far enough away from the beach not to be effected by a tsunami, which btw, the sunshine coast has had before, about 200 yrs ago if i remember the article i read correctly.. any way it can happen, the east coast of australia has had tsunami's in the past.. its the same with cyclones and the storm surge.. people build 3 meters from the beach in a cyclone zone and wonder why they house gets destroyed... seriously.. wake up!
