You're storing "extremely flammable" clothes dryer lint NEXT to your clothes dryer!?!?!?!!? You do realize you could burn your place down before TSHTF and LOSE all you lint stash? PLEASE...move it away from the clothes dryer NOW. |

Saves on using too much lighter fluid. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1228167Check the camping supply places for a "charcoal chimney". Uses NO lighter fluid at all. Makes fire-starting easy even if you're not using charcoal. Our local grocery stores carry them during barbeque season. |

Dr. House User ID: 1176427 United States 01/18/2011 12:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I save the tin lids from frozen juice tubes. I have actually used a few during power outages. We have those 5" long white 'emergency candles' Melt a few drops of candle into the middle and then set the candle in the melted wax, once it hardens the candle isn't going any where. I toss lint into the compost heap, along with shredded black and white paper (colors are often toxic ink) Mind this compost heap is for non-food crops since I am never 100% certain that the materials are 100% non-toxic. I have a large collection of pencils. There was a time when my workers were always losing pencils. So I started buying in bulk. Then one day they started holding on to pencils, but I didn't stop buying in bulk/ the gross. A gross is a dozen dozen or 144. I have about a dozen gross or about 1728 pencils. Wood Shims and Wood Stakes. It seems like just about every construction job we go on I am buying 'fresh' shims and stakes. In the shed I have a fairly large pile of these. Great kindling I suppose. Zeke User ID: 975536 United States 01/18/2011 12:45 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | For me? Quoting: Mother MaryClothes dryer lint. Extremely flammable, easy to light in case you need to start a fire. I have a pile of it next to my dryer, I need to find a bucket for it. What do you have that's odd, but works really well for a when TSHTF? wouldn't dry leaves work just as well? but you followed your title for the oddest thing. Zeke LOL I guess they would, as long as it was fall and it wasn't raining. It snows here all winter, so no leaves. Summer you;d have to pick them and let them dry out to be able to burn them in the first place. Dryer lint just seemed to much easier to collect and keep dry. I see your point. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1241200 Sweden 01/23/2011 11:44 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The oddest thing we have in our survival gear is a field surgical kit. It is completely sterile so I cannot detail it much beyond that it includes scapels and large saws in case one might have to perform amputations, or stitch wounds up. Its a little creepy but if you needed it, it would be good to know its all sterile and ready to go. My personal odd things are a menstrual cup which makes the stress of monthly sanitary needs less- [link to shop.ebay.com] My other favs are solar...flashlight, solar cooker, I can pasteurize water with, and cook and fry with. Also solar battery packs which can recharge cell phones or computers, as well as radios and lights. I have used these things, including a solar lighter- [link to www.wildwoodsurvival.com] for camping and cooking so know they will work for us. So far, no need for the surgical kit...hopefully it will remain on its shelf for a long time! |
