Pulled out my Magellan 315 GPS ......
I dug my old Magellan 315 out of storage and powered it up - why? - because sometimes old equipment can tell you stuff the new shit will not.
The Magelllan 315 was produced for about 2 years (1998-2000)
and that was when the "GPS" market really started to take off. It was fairly cheap (I paid about $160.00 at the time for it) and it served me well.
BUT the 315 with the ORIGIONAL software had a pretty cool function - it allowed you to pull up the SAT's that you were tracking and gave detailed info on every one (altitude, rise or set on the sun (acending or decending or stationary), currently active or down, "bumper number" or SAT ID number, degree's above horizon (and weather it was ascending or decending), and frequency it was operating on.

Well, I put the 315 on my back porch for about 2 hours (with fresh batteries) to let it get good tracking.
I ended up tracking 6 SAT's, 3 were signaling but inop (not tracking) 2 were operational, and get this - when I tried to pull up the data on SAT # 6 (ID 1141) it only came back as "LOCKED" - I have never seen that before.
Also I compared my military lensatic compass (that I have had and trusted for 22 years) to the 315 compass, the lensatic compass was off by 15 degrees ? !

Just wondering, I'm not exactly a rocket scientist, but
It just seems that things are "NOT RIGHT"!

I wish new COTS GPS units still ID'd satellites, or I'd try that myself. 22 degrees is significant. Are you sure the GPS is giving you correct info?

That I don't know - the lensatic compass (military issue) carried me thru 21 years in Army and never led me wrong.
I actually would trust it over a GPS for navigation any day !

Yeah, that's a good point. I agree, the compass don't lie, esp Army issue. If true, that is truly unsettling.

Re: Pulled out my Magellan 315 GPS ......
I was really going to resist jumping into this debate, but... Driving home this AM i had a nice view of the sunrise while I was headed south, the that sunrise was NOT off my left shoulder, it was off the left front fender of the car instead... in other words to the SOUTH EAST.

Then an hour later i was shovelling the driveway to get my car in off the road after I got home, I've lived in this place for 20 years and I know where the cardinal points of the compass fall, OK? and again instead of being slightly off the the left looking toward the road from the driveway, the sun was to the RIGHT... Again confirming a SOUTHERLY sun rise.

Something is WAY off in this world today, and we are NOT being informed about it...

i remember staking land in alaska and having to correct for the compass for almost 20 degrees. the declination here in texas is about 4 degrees. 15 degrees anywhere in the conus is gonna be anomalous, i would think.

Either of them could have a 15 degree 'correction' for the difference between the magnetic and terrestrial pole.

Probably no big deal...

Most likely the GPS was reading true north and the compass was reading magnetic north.

You could always check with a dial watch.

Re: Pulled out my Magellan 315 GPS ......
magnetic north has been moving toward Siberia at about 40 miles a year for the last few years. So not surprising your compass showing North based on magnetic north could be very different from GPS showing a "true" geographical north. Hince why they have been changing the headings on airport runways etc for readings based off magnetic compass readings. Also your older charts/maps showing magnetic declination variations (used to be like seven degrees in my area) are no longer valid and need to be updated if you are using a magnetic compass.

isn't the 'locked' satalite the one that it's lcoked onto with the best signal?

I'm getting a nice 404 on the manual for the 315, but I bet it's out there somewhere.

My lensatic compass has been showing a steady 28 degrees left of true (accounting for +16 declination for Seattle) for almost 3 weeks. For a few hours last week it jumped to 34 degrees left (no metal or EMF within 50 feet) but returned to 28 degrees.

My car compass, which does not have GPS, shows NW for true N and SE for true S, but E & W are correct. This all began around January 4th.

My WWII US Army artillery aiming compass is now pointing (from my location) right in the same line as Polaris, or at least was last night. From my location, magnetic north is the now apparently same as rotational polar north. I dug out three other compasses last night and one of them was definitely fubar, it was pointing what would be around 35 degrees East for a north indication. The other two agreed with my old artillery compass, which I found interesting.

My location is approximately 40N 99W.

Weird, I just checked again with the same artillery compass and it is a full 15 degrees East of where it was around mid-night last night. Definitely have some form of local magnetic anomaly going on at my location, note, I said, Local. Which I was set up to do magnetic declination readings as well.

Now I am beginnig to wonder just how much all this WiFi microwave broadcasts might be affecting magnetic compass readings of compasses not properly shielded against Microwave RF.

Curious indeed.
