N.E.W.S. Magnetic North moves 18 degrees East!
So at sunset this evening in Southern England, I set my compass to point due North. To make sure the kids or the cat or "she who must be obeyed" didn't knock it, I Blu-Tacked the compass to the kitchen work surface, with the red arrow right over the big black letter N for north.

Watched TV, ate supper, drank beer, checked compass, and the red arrow is now 18 degrees East of magnetic North.

Tried to take pics, but the kitchen has a neon light, I'm leaning over the compass so the camera shake is awful, the flashlight glares on the compass glass, and if I posted this out of focus sh*t it wouldn't be good enough for you, so you'll just have to take my word for it.

Magnetic North moved 18 degrees East after sunset today.

Maybe this happens every evening, I've never checked before.

Just a single can of 5.2 ABV Old Speckled Hen officer!
I know where the red arrow was, and I know where it is now, and the difference is 18 degrees.

But thanks for taking the trouble to comment.

BTW Did you ever see the twin pair of crop circles that some people think may represent the image of the Turin Shroud?

And now tonight, that same compass is pointing exactly 20 degrees East of North.

What is going on?

Speckled Hen? Are you in Lincolnshire? - I loved that beer while I worked in England for a couple months. Only I couldn't remember the name and asked for my co-worker to take me to have a "spotted chicken" - still laughing about that one.

But with your compass, that's weird....

is there any type of magnet or material that is near the compass that could throw it off?

I don't think so. Originally the compass was in another room with pcs and loudspeakers and lots of other equipment, so I moved the compass into the kitchen, turned it so the red line was pointing due north and stuck it down.

Nothing else has changed. has anybody else seen this?
There was a post last week saying his compass was off 180 degrees, maybe they meant 18?

Re: N.E.W.S. Magnetic North moves 18 degrees East!
Hundreds of fish have been found dead in the Six Mile Water river in County Antrim.

Billy Robinson from Ballynure Angling Club walked a few miles alongside the river on Sunday afternoon.

He said he has seen dead fish from Duck bridge right up towards Ballyclare.

"There are quite a few dead trout, from small fish, up to fish weighing three quarters of a pound to a pound in weight, so it seems to be a total fish kill," he said.

But.. but.. this makes no sense. What possible scenario could make magnetic North correct for you in the US and 20 degrees off for me in the UK? I'm starting to question my own observation, but I'm looking at the compass right now?

Diurnal change

The stream of ionized particles and electrons emanating from the Sun, known as solar wind, distorts Earth's magnetic field. As it rotates, any location will be subject alternately to the lee side, then the windward side of this stream of charged particles. This has the effect of moving the magnetic poles around an ellipse several tens of kilometers in diameter, even during periods of steady solar wind without gusts
