yes in TN. It is for anyone on public services such as food stamps, welfare and so on. It is a govt aid thing I guess from what I can tell.

around here this is old news. free (unlimited local) cell phones for the poor and elderly have been available for years. it's part of a federally funded (your tax dollars at work), and most unemployed young people take full advantage of the program.

No the add is now saying that this cell phone is free to anyone in case of an accident or emergency and specifically states that is paid for by the government. I'm just curious if it is a nation wide add of recent that's all.

I agree that if they are branching off and giving these to anyone who wants one, regardless of need, there is some intelligence agenda at work here.

No, it DOES NOT come with 250 minutes, but only 60.

Down here, Florida, cells are offerred to those on government assistance, like in the link provided in an earlier post. Have never heard of any free to all.

It's a national program. I know several ppl who have them. They just added the 250 minutes option. I saw it on an application from Job and Family Services packet. Not sure what the qualifications are for that many minutes. Pretty much, if you get any kind of gov't assistance, you qualify for a free 60 minute phone.

Of course we work for a living and fork out $170.00 for our family cell phone plan. And yes, part of the tax we pay on the bill every month goes directly to finance the Obama Phones. (LOL...that's what we call the Safe Link Program) So all you working ppl...keep paying that bill every month so more ppl can have free phones!!!

Couple of things here. It's a tracfone (company owned by carlos slim=mexico). It's paid via cell phone "federal service fund" fees; so yes it's a tax but not through income tax. I don't agree with the program at all but I doubt they'll "track, trace, and database" just these phones because they're doing that with EVERY CELL PHONE.

these are an part of the "lifeline" program that has been available for decades..

I used lifeline to get very low rate on my land line while College back in the early 90s.

Lived at home..not on campus..continued on lifeline for many years after

Its an Obama thing...so that the poor can call in sick at their mcdonalds job...and yes they give ya the 250 minutes and one of them either safelink or assurance gives ya free text too.

its crap,u get 60 minutes,or with safelink,68 minutes ,and the safelink ads states: local,long distance,txts,and rollover minutes,but there is no rollover,its a false ad,u get txt,local,long distance,but no rollover,u dont use it ,its taken...i know,i have one,and im about to give it back...

it comes with 68,125, or 250 a month my wife has one, 68 and 125 roll over but not the 250, this company is owned by Tracfone..

Careful, there is nothing free in this world. There is a price and if they are hiding it then I would be very wary. You want full disclosure on who is paying for it and for what reasons.
