HOW CAN ONE BE BOTH A HIPPIE AND A CHRISTIAN?
If we strip away all of the politics and materialism that has crept into the modern church and go back to First Century Christianity we will find an interesting parallel between true Christianity and Hippiedom sans the drugs and free love. Rather than reducing Jesus to a long hair Hippie cliche complete with beard and sandals I would prefer to focus on Jesus’ message and its relationship to Hippie culture. It is important to note that the banner of peace, love and cosmic connection under which most Hippies gather is at the very heart of Jesus’ teachings.

We can find the core of Jesus’ teachings in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew’s Gospel chapters 5 through 7. If only these three chapters of Jesus’ words survived the past two millennium we would have all the truth necessary to live in peace and harmony with both our Creator and our fellow pilgrims here on planet Earth. The Sermon on the Mount is what could be called the “Hippie Christian Manifesto”. It contains such treasures as The Beatitudes, The Lord’s Prayer, The Golden Rule, and Turning the Other Cheek.

But beyond those treasures, beyond the call to avoid hypocrisy, beyond the mandate to shun materialism, beyond the proclamation that peacemakers are God’s children, greater than all these we find in the Sermon on the Mount a theme that offers a connection to the Creator of the universe. Jesus does something totally revolutionary and unheard of before His time, He presents God as our Father.

Jesus is the consummation of our Hippie quest for not only peace and love but also Jesus provides the cosmic connection that binds all of us together as Children of The Light.

WHY THE NEED FOR A SEPARTE TITLE OF "HIPPIE CHRISTIAN"?:
I see that identifying myself as a Hippie Christian would be the same thing as someone describing them self as a Christian Cowboy, or a Christian Biker. The problem would be if one were to claim to be a Christian Drug Dealer, or Christian Satanist. As long as the two are not mutually exclusive the dual title helps give a clearer picture of a person’s values and heritage.

The title Hippie Christian explains not only my personal belief in Jesus as Savior, but also my cultural ideation as a Hippie. Growing up my family didn’t have any strong cultural identity, we were just WASP (White Anglo/Saxon Protestant) middle-class suburbanites. Just fully blended American Mutts, you know, white bread - no crust. Although I have a strong desire to explore my English (possible Irish) ancestry, Celtic Christian may become my future ideation, at this time I see Hippie as my cultural identity

Many Americas use this dual method of describing their ethnic and national heritage, for example, African American, Asian American, Native American. It can also be used to describe an ethnic origin and religious orientation, such as Irish Catholic or Black Muslim. If a person’s cultural heritage, national origin, religious orientation, or ethnic pride has a strong meaning to the individual, then to couple them together is very natural and helpful for that person and those with whom he/she interacts. Doing so gives that person a sense of identity and place in history and society.

It could become quite cumbersome though if one were to link too many titles together. In the 1960’s & 1970’s I was called a “Long Hair Hippie Jesus Freak”. Very descriptive, but far too long of a “handle” to use all the time. I could have added more to it in creating a more complete identity for my self, thus I would have been know as a “Long Hair Red Head Anglo/Saxon Middle-Class Suburban Hippie Jesus Freak”. As you can see this process of linking titles can become no more than silly nonsense and void of any real meaning if over done. It is only valuable if the most important ideations are linked to provide the most meaning to both the individual and to those around him/her.

The most important identity that I have is a Child of God.

CONCLUSION:

Going to church does not make you a Christian nor does wearing tie-dye make you a Hippie any more than sitting in a garage changes people into automobiles. Christianity and Hippiedom are both “heart things” and together they become a lifestyle more true to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount than what modern Christianity offers today.

Being a "Hippie Christian" is possible, and it is most likely less of a contradiction than being an "American Christian". If we all were to follow the truth contained in the Sermon on the Mount there would be less of a distinction between “Hippie” and “Christian”.

Peace, Love, and Light Through Jesus the Christ! (John 14:6)

I had the privilege of being a part of the hippie-Christian move of God here in Southern California in the 1970s.

Real Christians WERE hippies. Like Jesus and al his apolotles. They were all murdered by assholes.

It´s always the same. Because men are all nuts, that put their egos before what´s right and good.

i´m surprised some corporate marketing scheme hasn´t already trademarked the word ´hippie´ to use for a line of clothing or something. just think, you could have ´hippieTM´ protest gear or ´hippieTM´ vegetarian drum circle snacks. and for the christian hippie- ´Jesus Gear TM´!!

If Jesus were to walk down the street today he would be ´tagged´ as a hippie. Long hair, beard, sandles,

you get the picture.

Well this will date me but...

Hippies that were into Jesus were common in the 1960s and early 1970s, thus origin of the the Hippie slang "Jesus Freak". They were pot smoken, long hair´s and acid dropping like all the rest of the Hippies. With one exception after getting high they´d pull out the bible and start preaching at you.

They were not much liked among the counter-culture of the time. I mean really your tripping on Mister Sunshine (acid) and a Jesus Freak starts preaching about Hell fire and damnation. Makes for one hell of a bad bad trip with that imagery in your head while the main effects of LSD start to kick in.. LOL

Later the Jesus Freaks became the bases of the Fundie Christian Movement of the mid 1980s.

"Hippie Christian"

That´s me (Hippie Chic) long blonde hair, tyes, a musician with a love for nature. We are a tribe of 400 and growing. Peace, Love and Brotherhood. We all work 40 hour jobs have children on the honor roll, help our community. But we choose to stay to our own. We don´t have to worry about back stabbing, cheating, stealing, we all have the same ideas on what life should be. A hippies life is the life for me.

The sex and drugs planted were the reason the movement died, the underlying theme of the movement is ancient and still continues to those who choose that path.

It is Christ who said to leave it all and follow me, this says to be in this world not of it, do not be possessed by the material, but long for the connection of spirit into your everyday life, this is simple and it is the solution to a world trapped by elitist grasps for power.

It is easy to love, hard to hate, it destrys the fabric of your intergrity, that you should always strive to maintain, let your consiousness be your guide.

"The sex and drugs planted were the reason the movement died, the underlying theme of the movement is ancient and still continues to those who choose that path."

Naaa the movement Hippie and Jesus Freaks alike ,died on a single day in May at Kent State, Ohio. We realized that slogons such as Peace and Love and Daisy´s in gun barrels couldn´t stop the Man and his war machine from dominating the world. Piggy Greed won out.

The voice that was left after the gunsmoke cleared were voices like Abbie Hoffman and the Chicago Seven and the only song left was "Join the Revolution Man!"....sigh It was either that or blending back into the fold of society and try to make the best of your life and life of your family in a world gone mad.

::: Nightshade cranks up the Ravi Shanker and remembers the good old days. Of playing the flute at sunset at Pandamarama Commune, the day we parted in hug and kiss and headed back into the world...:::

I do hope though that this new generation of PlayStation kids get tired of the materialist greed machine feeding them the lie. An one day discover the Beauty that once was. I hope to see that old commune reclaimed from the underbrush and rebuilt again....

Well I’m not buying what you’re selling!

You seem conflicted, are you riding the edge, playing the grey, thinking you can have it both ways?

The movement will never die as long as a believer walks this earth, and I know many.

From what you say about Kent State and that beliefs can die just by a forceful opposition shows how little you believe in Jesus.

it´s easy to be a christian hippie...two worlds that are not far apart really...only a faint grip upon reality...belief in pathetic ghosts ( altho I´ll grant Jesus a whole lot more charisma points than turds like Jerry Garcia or Jim Morrison)..reeking sandals....tolerance for CIA mind control experiments ( so they say..mebbee unka sam thought the revolutionary spirit could be potentially bored to death by endless decades of pointless jamming ) don´t forget that the Deadheads begat fucking Ann Coulter either..

Re: HOW CAN ONE BE BOTH A HIPPIE AND A CHRISTIAN?
On leaving Babylon:

"INTRODUCTION:
"Babylon" means different things to different people. To the disillusioned, disheartened, and disenfranchised of the land, leaving "Babylon" means to shake off the chains of our corrupt modern society. Leaving "Babylon" means to be free of materialism, prejudice, greed, pollution... to be liberated from anything that has enslaved them by robbing them of individuality, personal freedom, community, and spirituality.

The following is in no way a complete treatment of the subject, but what does follow is a brief overview of Babylon past, present, and future; and hopefully a meaningful presentation of some of the deeper implications of leaving Babylon.

I would like to suggest that we follow Jesus’ example of seeking the spiritual basics as we examine what “Babylon” is and how to leave it behind. So, in an effort to present a spiritual view, here is one man’s opinion..."
