Aussies earning $50000 - 100000 a year hit with flood tax | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 745950 Australia 01/29/2011 10:28 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | After he whole controversy/conspiracy about the QLD government buying rain making technology from the Thai king Quoting: RaiZdbyDINGOES[link to news.smh.com.au] ,and maybe causing floods. australians on high incomes will now be hit with a so-called flood tax to cover the cost of the flood pay outs given to the flood victims [link to au.news.yahoo.com] The federal government will impose a one-off flood levy of 0.5 per cent for middle-income earners, Prime Minister Julia Gillard says. A levy of 0.5 per cent will be applied on taxable income between $50,001 and $100,000 and a levy of one per cent will be applied on taxable income above $100,000. "Anyone earning under $50,000 will not pay the levy," Ms Gillard told the National Press Club on Thursday. "In other words it is not like the Medicare levy, which for most taxpayers applies to all their income - it is like income tax rates which apply only above certain income levels." Someone who earns an income of $60,000 will pay just under $1 extra per week under the levy, Ms Gillard said. Yeah so no one now will donate a cent to any future disasters n Auz |

Quoting: 9 1231376They built illegal dams to catch all the water so they could sell it to the other states. The Wivenhoe dam stopped the vast majority of water from making it a bigger disaster. One dollar a week isn't going to break the bank, neither will five dollars a week. If you can't afford the flood levy then you have bigger problems. |
Flossy User ID: 1248485 Australia 01/29/2011 10:43 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I dont think this is such a bad idea, however I can see that it has great potential to be mismanaged. We are always faced with natural disasters here and some kind of back up is a good idea. Insurance companies are notoriously sly when it comes to pay outs and there are situations that companies wont allow insurance for flooding...ie if you live by the sea. I also dont think it should be just for floods either, I think it should be for all natural disasters. Fire and earthquakes are just as destructive. If all taxpayer paid a small amount each week, not just the wage bracket that they are suggesting, but all tax payers, I am sure we would be able to look after ourselves in times of strife. I earn well below the 40 k mark and am willing to pay |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1249910 Australia 01/30/2011 07:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The sin taxes are going up under the automatic indexation system introduced almost 30 years ago by Bob Hawke - and kept by John Howard, Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard - to try to stop cigarette and beer tax rises overshadowing the federal Budget. The excise is linked to inflation and changed on February 1 and August 1 every year THE Gillard Government will impose another slug on the hip pocket next week with cigarette, beer and spirit taxes all going up. It will be more pain on top of the proposed flood levy and rising electricity and food prices. The increase for so-called "sin taxes" will add 19c to a pack of 50 cigarettes, 14c to a pack of 40s and 11c to a pack of 30s. The tax will hit smokers and drinkers from Tuesday and collect millions of dollars for the Budget, but it has not yet been announced by any government minister. A smoker who buys a pack of 30 cigarettes a day will pay $70.63 a week in tax. It is the third tax rise for smokers in the past 12 months, including a 25 per cent rise last April to pay for the hospital reform plan. Beer drinkers face a 16c tax rise on a full-strength slab of 24 cans - taking the total excise on the carton to $14.44. A slab of light beer will increase by 5c. Spirit drinkers will suffer the biggest tax hit, with the Government adding 21c to the price of a 700ml bottle, taking its share on every bottle sold to $19.02. There will be a 36c leap in the tax collected for 24 cans of pre-mixed spirits, giving the tax man $32.61 a slab. A six-pack of pre-mixed spirits rises by 9c. Retailers must collect the extra tax but other factors, such as competition and business costs, could mean prices paid by consumers will differ from the tax increase and vary between brands. Dont forget all thats double dipped with a 10% gst on top Yeah lets bring in another fucking tax BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO |

The Australian Gold reserves come to mind. Retard boy sold off the aussie Gold reserves at 340 an ounce. He could have sold the Gold reserves today, paid for the queensland floods and still had change to buy a leader who was not a traitor for Israel. |

So what's the difference? If the government spends it, then it was money that was taxed from the people. You say John Howard taxed people 10 billion dollars more than he spent. That sounds like a BAD thing. Why should people pay an extra $10 billion in tax, so that the government can put it in the bank and say what a huge pile of money they've got? How does that benefit the country? Wouldn't it be better if the government taxed people approximately the same amount as they intended to spend, rather than taxing an extra $10 billion off people and bragging about it? |
