The hearty laughter upon her recoil has left an influencial engram that will affect her throughout her formative years, and on into life. This video capture is likely the resulting replay (second take version put on camera) of the childs reaction to grapefruit. "honey, lets get this on camera and put in on youtube, maybe it will go viral". Everyone laughing at it doesn't necessarily make it ok. I'll likely be jeered at from others because I have good parenting in mind. And its easier for them to shake a finger at me rather than make consider the weight of what it was I had to say. |

Have you seen America's Funniest Video's any time in the last few years? This is a show that features people of all ages getting harmed in freak accidents or by feats gone wrong, for laughs. Watch grandma fall on the ice and into the bucket where she fractures her hip bone. I don't see the humor in stuff like that, but it sells to a public desensitized to other peoples misfortune. Its insane. I don't get it, and I'm not missing the point either. Value systems. It was more important to those parents to get that reaction from their child on camera than her better interests. I can't think of one person that likes something so sour it gives them that reaction that they enjoy repeating it in the course of natural enjoyment, let alone a kid. |

I used to love lemons even though my face crinkled up. Did that from introduction to lemons until I was about 5. several years of this lemon obsession. So...I think you're slightly wrong. I know of two children in my family who have loved spicy food from first taste. They would say it's hot, and make a face, and always go back for more. Mild and medium never compared to the draw to the heat. Trying a variety of foods helps to develop taste buds and better acclimates a child to be less picky as they get older (making it easier to feed a child healthier food). If a kid doesn't want some sort of food, you know about it right away. Especially a 10 month old. They'll whine, cry, scream, and possibly run out of the room (or away from the offender). I highly doubt these people said "Let's feed Penny something AWFUL and see what she does!" She didn't spit it OUT, for goodness sakes. (And for the record, when my kid was that age, she would REACH for and MUNCH on lemon wedges and make the SAME face :) Child abuse? Hardly.) |
