Clapper said: "The term 'Muslim Brotherhood'...is an umbrella term for a variety of movements. In the case of Egypt, a very heterogeneous group, largely secular, which has eschewed violence and has decried al-Qaida as a perversion of Islam. They have pursued social ends, a betterment of the political order in Egypt, et cetera.....In other countries, there are also chapters or franchises of the Muslim Brotherhood, but there is no overarching agenda, particularly in pursuit of violence, at least internationally." It is quite true that they don't like al-Qaida (they are competitors, after all) and there is no strong central direction to the international movement. Other than that, I think my 11-year-old son could have given a better briefing although, to be fair, he is very smart and follows international affairs--unlike Clapper. Since its inception in 1928 the movement has officially opposed violent means to achieve its goals.[5][6] Jeremy Bowen, BBC Middle East editor, calls it "conservative and non-violent," The Brotherhood condemned terrorism and the 9/11 attacks, but whether or not it has ties to terrorism is a matter of dispute. The Brotherhood's nonviolent stance has resulted in breakaway groups from the movement, including the Al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya and Al Takfir Wal Hijra. Osama bin Laden has similarly criticized the Brotherhood, and accused it of betraying jihad and the ideals of Sayyid Qutb, an influential Brother member and author of Milestones. In Egypt, the Brotherhood has stated that, while it seeks the establishment of an Islamic state, it would not force women to cover up. [ link to en.wikipedia.org] |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1263381He was not even aware of the 11 terrorists arrested in England last year when queried at the time. We would be better served to outsource our Intelligence gathering to Mossad. |
