Anonymous Coward User ID: 1004493 United States 03/01/2011 09:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here's a little story...Take it for what it's worth. I see this story as how a little positive criticism or support can go a LONG way. This is especially true when worded/delivered correctly. This is for all the one line drive by hater types in general. Quoting: NevynShyneI have a couple of relatively famous musicians in my bloodline. Just go with it. I'm being humble. Suffice to say I spent quite a bit of time with my uncle, managing a bar in Wisconsin. I was fresh out of college as a vocal and classical guitar major. I was quite skilled TECHNICALLY, but still hadn't found 'my voice'. My uncle, whom I love and respect, had no kind words to say. Basically a "don't even try." kind of attitude. I found out years later, in one of the few 'real' conversations I had with him that the reasons he said such harsh things was that he was jealous and felt intimidated. He basically said that he wished he had my skill/talent and at such a young age. Keep in mind, this is from a relatively well known singer; someone whom I look/looked up to for many many years. His harsh words (along with the same type of harsh words from other 'famous' family members) was why I was always looking for their approval. More of a "I gotta prove to them I can do it." kinda thing. It made for very low self-esteem and for some poor life choices. If I had received positive criticism and maybe even a little support, instead of each family member transferring their issues to me...well...life may have turned out differently. Que sera sera. I spent several years chasing the rock n roll dream. I did 'aight', but still didn't feel I had the approval of my peers; my family. It took me QUITING and rediscovering me; finding MY voice, who I am... NOW I understand, and have been able to mostly 'put it behind me'. I'm quite OK with who I am and am not. It took many many years to deal with the 'crap'. THIS is why the most important thing I can say to a person who wants to pursue music is to have the WHY figured out. The rest will work itself out. SO...I always TRY to give positive critiques and some support. Sometimes I fail spectacularly. I'm known as an arsehat by some people. lol. Music is powerful. It's in us. It is how many people view themselves (through music). It defines their paradigms and says the words that many times we just can't seem to say. If you get joy listening to or making music, then it's purpose is served. Period. The rest is just icing. Do YOUR thing. Such a nice share, Nevynshyne. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1004493 United States 03/01/2011 09:38 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Even Leonard Cohen refers to KD Lang version as perfection. Quoting: Madame Xk.d. lang recorded a version of "Hallelujah" in 2004 on her album Hymns of the 49th Parallel. She has several times been chosen to sing the song at major events, such as at the Canadian Juno Awards of 2005,[15] where her rendition "brought the audience to its feet for a two-minute ovation."[16] Lang also sang it at the 2006 Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame on the occasion of Cohen's induction into the Hall of Fame.[17] Of that rendition, Cohen's partner, singer Anjani Thomas, said: "After hearing k.d. lang perform that song at the Canadian Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2006 we looked at each other and said, 'well, I think we can lay that song to rest now! It's really been done to its ultimate blissful state of perfection'."[18] She sang the song at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, before a claimed TV audience of 3 billion.[19] [link to en.wikipedia.org] Leonard Cohen is a favorite. His sultry sexy voice more than makes up for his lack of range. We are fortunate to produce so many really exceptional artists to enjoy. Thanks for sharing the k.d. lang version! That IS amazing. She's adorable. |
