Feds: Keep autopsies in Tucson-area shootings private

Federal prosecutors have asked a judge to block the public release of the autopsy findings for the six people killed in the Tucson-area shootings that also left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) gravely injured.

In a request Monday, the prosecutors pursuing the case against alleged shooter Jared Lee Loughner asked U.S. District Judge Larry Burns to place a gag order on the autopsies and to bar the Pima County medical examiner's staff from talking to the media about the case. The prosecutors said in their filing that the families of five of the victims have requested that the autopsy results be kept private.

Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.

High Court Refuses to Limit Gag Orders in U.S. Criminal Cases

By Greg Stohr - October 2, 2006 10:37 EDT

Oct. 2 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Supreme Court, turning away an appeal by lawyer and television commentator Gloria Allred, refused to limit judges' power to impose gag orders on attorneys and other participants in criminal trials.

The justices, without comment, today rejected Allred's arguments that a judge's order in the murder trial of Scott Dyleski violated the U.S. Constitution's free-speech guarantee. Participants including Allred, who represented Dyleski's girlfriend, were barred from revealing non-public evidence in the case.

The Supreme Court has never considered the rules governing gag orders in criminal cases. Judges issued orders limiting discussion in recent criminal proceedings involving singer Michael Jackson and basketball star Kobe Bryant.

``In virtually every high profile case, it is now routine for trial courts to issue broad gag orders preventing attorneys, parties and witnesses from making public statements,'' Allred argued in papers filed in Washington.

What's the point? That it's not unprecedented for this to happen and there's no 'conspiracy' involved? The Feds will get their gag order imposed - nothing to see - move along? I understand that point very well. Or do you see another point?

If we play along, this works both ways - which means that everything said to the press by everyone involved can easily be invalidated and thrown out as substantiating 'evidence' if such an order is allowed.

It means that since the US Federal Government in Washington DC, it is a private Corporation and it does not have to share its private business affairs with its employees, the US Citizens.

That is what it means.

If I were a defense attorney, I'd motion to have every body exhumed and autopsies re-peformed. Oh, but wait, that can't be done because supposedly some of the vicims were cremated and the girl's organs were donated! Evidence destroyed.

I don't get it either. There couldn't be anything in particular for the victims families to hide, I would thing. Maybe prosecutors are using this reason as an excuse to block autopsy info, but why?

In the memo, Captain Williams said the firefighter had said “there were underlying issues regarding the call that brought up a lot of anger and made him ineffective as a firefighter.”

Sounds like someone suspected what was really going on, and didn't want to be a part of it.

exactly, the judge was the target. The autopsy gag is because there was more than one shooter and the autopsy results would prove it. (Round/wound counts)My bet is the patsy prolly only hit a couple but the guy with the MP5 or maybe a 9mm AR-15 did the lions share of the damage.

That parking lot was HEAVILY surveilled..Good thing all the video was seized under "national security" warning to any good police investigating this kind of stuff, you better watch your backs- you know what happened to the cops that started sniffin' around after OK City...

Absolutely. Learn to think outside the media template like this person.

No video. No surveillance video. No hand-held cell phone video.

Or more precisely, no video that they PERMIT YOU TO SEE.

Likewise, no pics.

No pics of Gifford recovering in the hospital.

A few other people that supposedly died... that we hear nothing about.

A suspected shooter whom we only see in the form of a creepy mug shot. No other pics of him since then.

A FEDERAL JUDGE that died, and is barely mentioned in any of the reporting by the media.

Add it all up, skippy. Then think outside the box.

No, it was Giffords.

She was supporting a crack down on illegals and pissed of the DNC and Obama. The judge was there to tell her about the massive amount of violent drug cartel crime infiltrating the State from Mexico. Many of our politicans are funded by the drug cartels, Obama included.
