BREAKING!!!! - Egypt PM Ahmed Shafiq resigns
military appoints ex-transport minister, Essam Sharaf, to form new government [link to www.breakingnews.com]

CAIRO - Egypt's Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq resigned on Thursday and a former transport minister was picked to appoint a new government after pro-democracy activists demanded a purge of Hosni Mubarak's old guard from the cabinet.

Military rulers said they had accepted the resignation of Shafiq and appointed Essam Sharaf in this place.

Getting hard to follow all this without a scorecard and player stat sheets. Was this Shafiq dude the chief torturer for Mubarek, the guy referred to in the CIA as Mubarek's poodle?

Essam Sharaf, a former minister of transport. Sharaf was one of a handfull of ex-ministers, who declared their support for the revolution in its early days, and is said to have joined the protesters in Tahrir Sq, days before ex-president Mubarak stepped down. Sharaf, a professor of engineering who served under Mubarak during 2004-2006 [link to english.ahram.org.eg]
