Never Forget.... Spring Is Aurora Season

Spring is aurora season. For reasons not fully understood by scientists, the weeks around the vernal equinox are prone to Northern Lights. Canadians walking their dogs after dinner, Scandinavians popping out to the sauna, Alaskan Huskies on the Iditarod trail—all they have to do is look up and behold, green curtains of light dancing across the night sky. Spring has arrived!

A significant geomagnetic storm is underway, and the Northern Lights will be visible across the n’rn United States! Best chances will be in the shaded area of the first image, but everywhere north of the green line has potential. Areas with Aurora overhead highlighted in image 2.

Geomagnetic Storm Warning
Minor (G1) to Moderate (G2) geomagnetic storming will be possible during the next 24-36 hours when a coronal mass ejection (CME) observed on March 20th is expected to at least partially impact our planet. Aurora sky watchers at higher latitudes should be alert beginning on Saturday.

PEBBLES AND BAM BAMM!

Solar wind speed at a whopping low of 265.7km/sec. Anyone know the record low? Looking on line can't really get a number. Wiki and some science links say lowest recorded was Sept. 2008 but they don't give numbers. We've only been recording it for 50 years.

My estimate of the cme going North and West looks like it was correct. Nasa had it at 75% likelihood.

" There are lots of people that have posted about this in the ring video app and the next door app for neighbors in our area. A lot of people heard it and some people reported houses rattling from the boom. I certainly heard it myself. I didn’t see it myself but this is the only video currently available of the event.

I wanted it noted in case something could come of it. People have been out scouting wooded areas of common ground looking for impact location.

Apparently some other neighbors heard this terminus flash/what they call a Shock wave blast.

After the sighting on video, it was heard about 25 seconds later. A very loud boom! Listen to end of video.

There were multiple accounts of separate but close proximity, within 5-7 miles, around the exact same time of other booms that likely wouldn’t have been heard at the farthest distances from side a to side b. "

Shock Passage Detected, Finally! (UPDATED)

Well well well. What appears to be a very weak shock passage, if you even want to call it that, was just observed by the DSCOVR spacecraft. The solar wind increased slightly from around 270 km/s to near 300 km/s, along with a small but sudden increase in plasma density and temperature. The Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) remains pointed north at the moment, a condition that could suppress a noteworthy geomagnetic increase. We will see what the next several hours brings.

UPDATE: Ground based magnetometers just detected a weak geomagnetic sudden impulse. This signals the exact moment that the interplanetary shockwave passed our planet. The current solar wind speed is 300 km/s and the Bz/IMF component is 4.3 North. Based on this data, geomagnetic storming is not likely in the short term, however additional fluctuations will be possible in the hours ahead.

So Long 2736

Sunspot group 2736 is now turning onto the west limb and out of direct Earth view. Should it survive the trip across the farside of the sun, we will begin to see what is left of it around April 7th. Thanks for providing us with a little bit of excitement during this mostly unremarkable period of very low solar activity.

FEELIN A LIL SOLAR DHOOM BONER...?..

HOLES IN THE SUN'S ATMOSPHERE: Even if today's CME does not spark a geomagnetic storm, auroras may still be in the offing. A network of holes in the sun's atmosphere is facing Earth, spewing a filamentary stream of solar wind in our direction: [link to spaceweather.com]

The gaseous material could arrive as early as March 26th, although March 27-28 is more likely. The approaching stream is not as potent as a CME, but it could be geoeffective anyway. At this time of year, cracks are opening Earth's magnetic field--a phenomenon known as the "Russell-McPherron effect." Even gentle gusts of solar wind can ignite bright auroras around the Arctic Circle.
