SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily)

Another First for Me-- I can't recall ever seeing a cME impact which REDUCED the solar wind velocity. From an avg around 372 kms/s to 309 km/s. You can see the decrease in speed at the same time as a minor increase in density and a change of the Phi angle. Look near 01:30 UTC (Greenwich Mean Time).

I don't expect any major effects from any of these CMEs, although a cumulative effect may produce some sort of disturbances. Our magnetic field is NOT WEAK (or we'd be dying quickly) and is easily up to task of deflecting these tiny ejections. I hope I'm wrong 'cause its fun to watch a G3 storm unfold. I wish I could access my old smilies so I could remind everyone what a real CME looks like.

I was looking forward to upgrading in anticipation of Solar Maximum and my COVID 'stimulus' check. However, I was basically evicted (illegal at the time) so I decided to bug out to the Smokey Mtns. and do the Lord's bidding if I'm able. So far, so good!

I still have some karma points but I was saving them for a really significant sunspot group.....by the way here's a real nice CME from Cycle 24--

DENSE CME IMPACT: A CME just hit Earth's magnetic field, around 1250 UT on May 26th. The solar storm cloud abruptly doubled the density of the solar wind near Earth (from 10 to 20 protons/cc). It is too soon to know if a geomagnetic storm will develop as a result of the CME's arrival. Stay tuned for updates.

STRANGE RING-SHAPED SUNSPOT: A new sunspot is emerging west of AR2824, and it's a little strange. The ring-shaped active region is inset in this magnetic map from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory:

Not only is the sunspot's shape unusual, but also its magnetic field. Usually the magnetic poles of sunspots are aligned roughly east-west. AR2824 (-/+) is a good example. But the poles of the new sunspot are rotated ~90 degrees from normal, almost perpendicular to the sun's equator.

This new sunspot is worth monitoring. Amateur astronomers with safely-filtered telescopes, you know what to do!
