Planetary Scientist Katherine de Kleer (Cal Tech) in a knowledgable yet personable interview about moons, planets, asteroids and more. The Eddie Munster-like interviewer seems unprepared and seems obsessed by alien life forms. Nonetheless, I found it very insightful even tho they failed to discuss Iapetus, Dione and Miranda --my 3 favorite moons.

SOLAR SECTOR BOUUNDARY CROSSING: Earth is about to cross a fold in the heliospheric current sheet--a vast wavy structure in interplanetary space separating regions of opposite magnetic polarity. The crossing, called a "solar sector boundary crossing," is expected on June 30th and could trigger minor geomagnetic activity around Earth's poles.

Should be a calm and cool 4th of July weekend. It is said so it shall be done.

A MINOR CME IS COMING: A coronal mass ejection (CME) that left the sun on June 29th is approaching Earth. ETA: July 3rd. It's only a minor CME, and the resulting impact should be minor as well. High-latitude auroras are possible, if not geomagnetic storms.

Solar Activity 24 hr Summary...

Solar activity was very low. B-class flaring was observed from Regions
2836 (S26W36, Axx/alpha) and 2837 (N17E15, Dro/beta). Slight decay was
observed in Region 2836 and the trailing spots of Region 2835 (S18W29,
Dkc/beta-delta). Region 2835 developed a weak delta as the main
penumbral area connected with some of the intermediate spots. Region
2837 grew slightly. A new region of emerging flux was noted in the NW
quadrant.

Other activity included an eruptive prominence observed off the NW limb
in GOES SUVI 304 imagery beginning at 02/1401 UTC. An associated CME was
observed in SOHO LASCO C2 imagery beginning at 02/1536 UTC. Modeling of
this CME will commence as further imagery becomes available. However,
due to its location beyond the NW limb, it will likely not have a
geoeffective component.

.Forecast...
Solar activity is likely to be low with a slight chance for M-class
(R1-R2, Minor-Moderate) radio blackouts on 03-05 Jul due to the magnetic
complexity of Region 2835.

Nice one! The SWPC forecast a 15% chance of an M-flare, but they had the wrong AR and the wrong hemisphere, lol.

FIRST X-FLARE IN 4 YEARS: A new sunspot emerged during the early hours of July 3rd and promptly exploded, producing the first X-class solar flare since Sept. 2017. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme ultraviolet flash:

A pulse of X-rays briefly ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, causing a shortwave radio blackout over the Atlantic Ocean. Mariners, aviators, and amateur radio operators may have noticed unusual propagation effects below 30 MHz just after 1429 UT.

The source of this flare is an un-numbered sunspot now growing near the sun's northwestern limb. Yesterday it did not even exist, highlighting the unpredictability of solar activity. More flares may be in the offing, so stay tuned.
