SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily)

UNEXPECTED SOLAR WIND GUST: A gust of solar wind buffeted Earth's magnetic field on Sept. 7th around 1400 UT. The sharp uptick in solar wind speed was unexpected, arriving too soon to be a CME from the B7-class solar flare only two days earlier. Whatever it was, the transient has set the stage for high-latitude auroras on the night of Sept. 7-8.

AR2866 and 2868 are magnetically interlocked!

If one regions pops off a big flare I won't be surprised if the other spot answers back. Large sunspot regions so close together is not common and they're prone to interact.

I think I found what is hitting us now.

On Sept. 5th, a slow, oozing CME on the SW limb.... but if you look closely you can see a very faint halo CME.

The Solar Winds have been at super-slow Solar Minimum speeds for the past week (often below 300 km/s). Even this transient could't put us near a 400 km/s avg. SW speed. But this is officially Aurora Season, so any disturbance is magnified accordingly.... even stealth CMEs.

Some of the biggest geomagnetic storms happen in Sept/Oct. Stay alert for any Earth-directed events. AR2866/2868 is now in the "Danger Zone" for geoeffective events.

I sure hope the earthquake in Mexico causes an X-flare, lol.

I have to rise at 4am or I would hold a vigil for 2866. But the sun is unpredictable in its ways and most big flares wait 'til I'm asleep.

As of yet I've seen no indication of a CME with this one.

We almost assuredly have an Earth-directed CME from the earlier C 2.3 flare from AR2864 in the north.

STEREO Ahead has only limited imagery of this due to long data gaps. We know from the Radio Emission alerts that something significant was ejected. Here's what I could find so far.....

I'm very disappointed in the CACTus computerized CME detection software. Generally I find their data untrustworthy but sometimes useful. CACTus missed the boat on this CME, but some imagery can be seen in another inconsequential detection. Disregard the velocity readings and other data, but have a look-see:

Speaking of C-2021 when first reported it was the size of Jupiter then it was down graded to an ice comet with a debris tail a million miles long as seen in Jan.2021 approaching from the Oort cloud How big is C-2021 Leonard

New emerging AR2869 is really far south -35 degrees, directly below 2866.

I'm not the only who noticed the magnetic connectedness of '68 & '66. Stanford/HMI has them within the same box here:

I don't exactly know what 'HARP' is, but it's not connected to HAARP in AK.

Solar Activity

.24 hr Summary...
Solar activity reached low levels as several spot groups produced
occasional C-class flares. Region 2863 (Hsx/alpha, S16W54) was stable
and inactive. Region 2864 (N24W38, Hsx/alpha) underwent some decay, but
was the source of a C2/Sf flare and associated Type II and IV radio
sweeps. Region 2866 (S18E07, Dkc/beta) grew slightly in areal coverage,
and was the source of C1/Sf flare at 08/1026 UTC, as well as a C8/1n
flare, the largest of the period, at 08/1730 UTC. Region 2868 (S21W08,
Dhi/beta) exhibited decayed in its trailer spots, but did manage to
produce a C2/Sf flare as well. New Region 2869 (S35E12, Bxo/beta) began
to show some growth towards the end of the period, but was quiet at the
time of this discussion.

The CME associated with the C2/Sf flare from Region 2864 has been
analyzed, but additional modeling is underway to determine if there is
an Earth-directed component and an approximate arrival time if there is.

.Forecast...
Solar activity is expected to be at low levels 09-11 Sep, with a slight
chance for M-class flares (R1-R2; Minor-Moderate radio blackouts) all
three days.
