Further C class solar flares are expected today NewRegionsOverview: [link to www.solarham.com] INFO FROM SIDC - RWC BELGIUM Sun Oct 30 2011, 1234 UT The Sun has produced four small C-flares in the last 24 hours. C-flares are probable within the next 48 hours, with a slight chance for an M-flare, especially from NOAA regions 11330, 11324 and an unnumbered region displaying fast flux emergence at about E40N12. ACE solar wind data indicate that a sector boundary crossing occurred around 21h UT on October 29. The ACE instruments also observed a small shock in the solar wind at 08:55 UT on October 30. The solar wind jumped from 282 to 302 km/s, and the interplanetary magnetic field strength (IMF) went from 3 to 5 nT. This shock is probably linked to the arrival of one or more of the CMEs first seen by LASCO C2 around October 26, 10h UT; October 27, 12h UT; and October 28, 21h UT. Currently, solar wind speed and the IMF are still rising. Active geomagnetic conditions are expected on the second half of October 30, with a chance for a minor geomagnetic storm. Quiet geomagnetic conditions are likely for October 31 and November 1. [link to sidc.oma.be] WSA-Enlil Solar Wind Prediction [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] |

Should see spaghetti in the Field Lines soon. A weak solar wind shock was observed at 09:52 UTC at ACE This could be the arrival of the CME observed on October 27 Unsettled to active conditions are possible for the remainder of the day More: [link to www.solen.info] |

I found a neat NASA data center that makes it easy to check on different charts, images, CMEs,etc. [link to hesperia.gsfc.nasa.gov] And there's a flare-tracker/browser at Berkely (which stopped working in realtime today)-you can go to any date to view x-ray flux and spectrograph data. What made researchers think of a link between plate tectonics and the magnetic field? The discovery that convective liquid iron flows play a role in magnetic reversals: experiments and modeling work carried out over the last five years have in fact shown that a reversal occurs when the movements of molten metal are no longer symmetric with respect to the equatorial plane....
