joinca User ID: 8793176 United States 07/23/2012 01:38 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The Sun's Magnetic Field The electric currents in the Sun generate a complex magnetic field with extends out into interplanetary space to form the interplanetary magnetic field. As the Sun's magnetic field is carried out through the solar system by the solar wind, the Sun is rotating. Its rotation winds up the magnetic field into a large rotating spiral, known as the Parker spiral, named after the scientist who first described it. Good to see you spidey! “One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” – Carl Sagan |

That's crazy fast but impressive! WOW.........freaking fast. that would be almost 1/10th the speed of light....700 million mph so a CME would get here to earth within hours. Isis One User ID: 14343270 United States 07/23/2012 02:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here are two noobee questions.....1)on the X-ray flux graphs, what does the blue line on the bottom represent ?(I always seem to watch only the red line). 2) why do we seem to make B Class flares seem like they are totally inconsequential? I've been watching 1125 and she's thrown out three nice little B flares. I assume they still impact earth's atmoshpere, right? Quoting: Isis One At the bottom of the GOES chart is following explanation: The GOES X-ray flux plot contains 1 minute averages of solar X-rays in the 1-8 Angstrom (0.1-0.8 nm) and 0.5-4.0 Angstrom (0.05-0.4 nm) passbands. Data from the SWPC Primary GOES X-ray satellite is shown. [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] Passbands are signals of a range of frequencies or wavelengths that measure x-ray flux. We use the 1-8 Angstrom (0.1-0.8 nm)of the GOES X-ray flux chart to measure the size of a flare. A flare whether an A,B,C,M or X's impact on earth is only as great as the size and intensity of the CME (coronal mass ejection)it may or may not produce, not necessarily the size or category of that particular flare. That being said, it is not "typical" ( nor have I witnessed ) that a B flare would or could produce the same size CME as an M, or X flare is capable of producing. So yes a B flare can and does impact the earth's magnetosphere, again depending on the size and intensity of the CME it produces, however, chances are slim to none it would ever result in a CME as large as a C, M, or X flare, so we tend to not pay as close attention. Hope that makes sense ??? I tried. Hi TS, thanks for the info and yes it helped a lot! I did not know that the flare's potency is determined by it's CME. I guess that gives me another question....is there no effects from a flare devoid of a CME. It looks like a pretty big flash of electromagnetic activity that could propagate far and wide to me (even without a CME). Thanks again. Spread the word, change the collective conscious...... According to [link to www.ips.gov.au] it rotated back into view yesterday. It's the on nearly the same latitude but it didnt survive but old spot 1515 is still there to the south and aproaches also the east limb If that's the case, I'm starting to have my doubts about this site. Updated today it says 1513 is still a moderate solar region, moderate activity, and stable condition. Reg# flares level lat long area mag. state Due on 1513 M-flare(s) MODERATE 17 89 180 ALPHA STABLE 22 7 2012 *note: it hasn't changed it's status of any of the regions since I started monitoring the site last week. dang these silly SS numbers i have been following 1515 and it's friends the whole way around. now i see this [link to sidc.oma.be] it is so dang hard to know when they drop all reference to old numbers. but i thought we did see 1513 come around and now there is no mistaking 1515 as it comes. it seems connected to the region above it...is that the old 1513? any way, 1515 it coming around hot and pissed off. even though it is listed as declining. lot us hope it will. come hot... or decline... i will leave that up to you. i believe the status on them is listed as they were when they rotated off the western limb and not as they are right now this is why the status (as Declining" for 1515) would remain that same status the entire time it is on the backside in rotation this does not mean it is declining right now, but as it was when it was last earth facing it looks big, maintaind in size and ready to give us another show in the coming days suntards get your rest and you needed things around home! cause we will have old region 1515 coming back in a few days and once its ready to rotate over the western limb, we will have old sunspot region 1520 back again busy time ahead!!! Quoting: psyoptics i would think a lot! think of it like a car (thats what i do... same sort of physics) if you have a small honda hitting something going 30mph, it does damage but if that same honda is going 100mph, it will do way more damage to that same impact object now think of the same with a Semi is the CME a honda or a Semi and is it going 30 or 100? so to speak, of course ^^ Last Edited by NiNzrez on 07/23/2012 04:39 PM Join Me On The GLP SOLAR WATCH Thread Thread: SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017!
