We just had a brief G2 (Kp6) storm. I noticed the ACE solar wind speed was above 700 km/s from that coronal hole. Things seem to be calming down now a bit.

Besides 2553 & '54 there are only 2 or 3 tiny freckles on the Earth-facing disk. Unfortunately the far side looks devoid of activity. One or two ARs may be coming around soon, but most of the regions in the east have been only plage regions (EUV bright, but spotless).

Huge Dark Hole on The Sun & New Storms: Solar Storm Forecast 06-16-2016

A huge dark coronal hole on the Sun slams Earth with some fast solar wind right now causing some sporadic disturbances. We arent getting much aurora from this solar storm, but that may change as some new active regions rotating into Earth view on the east limb are launching solar storms just off to our east. FARSIDE SOLAR ACTIVITY: The Earth-side of the sun is quiet, with only two sunspots producing very low-level flares. The farside of the sun, however, is more active. On June 16th, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory detected this CME billowing over the sun's northeastern limb: [link to spaceweather.com]

The source of the explosion is on the other side of the sun. It might be an active sunspot hidden from view by the body of the sun. If so, more CMEs are possible in the days ahead as the sunspot continues to flare. None of the CMEs, however, would be geoeffective until the active region turns toward Earth. For now, Earth-directed solar activity remains very low.

OK now I'm really confused. I said it was Venus and it was not. I said Venus based on looking up the planets today site and on the 15th when you asked, the only thing "behind" or anywhere near the sun was Venus. Now, today we see Venus just off to the left of the sun and when I check planets today, Jupiter is seen in the upper right hand corner nearer to the area of the "white dot" you asked about on the 15th. It would have moved to upper right hand corner by today the 17th. Little bit of a mystery to me why It was not indicated on planets today on the 15th. Sorry.

Yes, a geographically large event, but only a faint CME on the far side. The far side is mostly blank so I don't see much hope for any uptick in activity any time soon (unless the big spot erupts).

"Problem is, at Jupiter, looking for the kind of data Juno is looking for, you have to go in the kind of neighborhoods where you could find trouble pretty quick." (snip)

"Over the life of the mission, Juno will be exposed to the equivalent of over 100 million dental X-rays," said Rick Nybakken, Juno's project manager from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. "But, we are ready. We designed an orbit around Jupiter that minimizes exposure to Jupiter's harsh radiation environment. This orbit allows us to survive long enough to obtain the tantalizing science data that we have traveled so far to get." (snip)

Without the vault, Juno's electronic brain would more than likely fry before the end of the very first flyby of the planet. But, while 400 pounds of titanium can do magical things, it can't do it forever in an extreme radiation environment like that on Jupiter. The quantity and energy of the high-energy particles is just too much. However, Juno's special orbit allows the radiation dose and the degradation to accumulate slowly, allowing Juno to do a remarkable amount of science for 20 months.

"Over the course of the mission, the highest-energy electrons will penetrate the vault, creating a spray of secondary photons and particles," said Heidi Becker of JPL, Juno's Radiation Monitoring Investigation lead. "The constant bombardment will break the atomic bonds in Juno's electronics."

(Hypothesized) PLANET NINE MAY BE STOLEN--

Through a computer-simulated study, astronomers at Lund University in Sweden show that it is highly likely that the so-called Planet 9 is an exoplanet. This would make it the first exoplanet to be discovered inside our own solar system. The theory is that our sun, in its youth some 4.5 billion years ago, stole Planet 9 from its original star.

An extrasolar planet, or exoplanet, is by definition a planet located outside our solar system. Now it appears that this definition is no longer viable. According to astronomers in Lund, there is a lot to indicate that Planet 9 was captured by the young sun and has been a part of our solar system completely undetected ever since. (snip)

"There is still no image of Planet 9, not even a point of light. We don't know if it is made up of rock, ice, or gas. All we know is that its mass is probably around ten times the mass of earth."

At least one Brown Dwarf produces flares bigger than the Sun--

A research team led by John Gizis, professor in UD’s Department of Physics and Astronomy, discovered an “ultracool” brown dwarf known as 2MASS 0335+23, with a temperature of only 4400°F that can generate flares stronger than the sun’s. Gizis reported on the finding on June 13 at the annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society in San Diego.

“This brown dwarf is very young by star standards — only 23 million years old,” Gizis said. “It has lots of flares that are as hot as or hotter than the flares coming off full-fledged stars. This shows that the warmer brown dwarfs can generate flares from magnetic field energy just like stars. Our work shows, however, that colder brown dwarfs cannot generate flares even though they also have magnetic fields.”

The Milky Way, the brilliant river of stars that has dominated the night sky and human imaginations since time immemorial, is but a faded memory to one third of humanity and 80 percent of Americans, according to a new global atlas of light pollution produced by Italian and American scientists.

Light pollution is one of the most pervasive forms of environmental alteration. In most developed countries, the ubiquitous presence of artificial lights creates a luminous fog that swamps the stars and constellations of the night sky.

"We've got whole generations of people in the United States who have never seen the Milky Way," said Chris Elvidge, a scientist with NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information in Boulder, Colorado. "It's a big part of our connection to the cosmos -- and it's been lost."

Stellar Occultations Shed Additional Light on Pluto's Atmosphere

Approximately four hours after New Horizons made its closest approach to Pluto on July 14 - when the spacecraft was about 200,000 miles (320,000 kilometers) beyond Pluto - the Alice ultraviolet spectrometer instrument on board the spacecraft "watched" as two bright ultraviolet stars passed behind Pluto and its atmosphere.

The light from each star dimmed as it moved through deeper layers of Pluto's atmosphere, absorbed by various gases and hazes.

Much like the solar occultation that Alice had observed a few hours before - when it used sunlight to make similar measurements - these stellar occultations provided information about the composition and structure of Pluto's atmosphere.

Life on Ceres? Mysterious Changes in the Bright Spots Still Baffle Scientists-

'However, these detected variations still continue to perplex the astronomers as they haven't found a plausible explanation for their occurrence.

"We know nothing about these changes, really. And this increases the mystery of these spots," Molaro told Astrowatch.net.

One of the proposed hypotheses is that the observed changes could be triggered by the presence of volatile substances that evaporate due to solar radiation. When the spots are on the side illuminated by the sun they form plumes that reflect sunlight very effectively. The scientists suggest that these plumes then evaporate quickly, lose reflectivity and produce the observed changes.' (snip)

If the team's theory is confirmed, Ceres would seem to be internally active. While this dwarf planet is known to be rich in water, it is unclear whether this is related to the bright spots. It is also still debated if Ceres due to its vast reservoir of water, could be a suitable place to host microbial life.

Very sad. I can catch only a very dim sense of it on crystal clear cold winter nights.

I remember seeing it in summertime not so many years ago, but now you need to find a remote, dark area. The Chemtrails also scatter the ambient light, washing out any subtle faint objects in the sky (and blurring everything else).

Still visible from Peru (at least in 2012 it was).

it seems to me that Ben keeps getting it wrong. He keeps saying that the CME are earth directed when i can tell that they are farsided. Also NASA DONKI doesn't even metion that they are earth directed either. SDIC also says No Earth directed CMEs have been recorded in coronagraph
data.

No comments on the huge spikes in density and even a few speed spikes in the last 24 hours?

Seems like when there is a proton spike the speed normally drops off, but the proton values have nearly hit 100 with the speed up around 600....

spaceweather says nothing about it, what say you solar geeks?

"Electric Wind" Can Strip Earth-Like Planets of Oceans and Atmospheres
Venus has an "electric wind" strong enough to remove the components of water from its upper atmosphere, which may have played a significant role in stripping Earth's twin planet of its oceans, according to new results from the European Space Agency's Venus Express mission by NASA-funded researchers.

"It's amazing, shocking," said Glyn Collinson, a scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Maryland. "We never dreamt an electric wind could be so powerful that it can suck oxygen right out of an atmosphere into space. This is something that has to be on the checklist when we go looking for habitable planets around other stars." Collinson is lead author of a paper about this research published in Geophysical Research Letters, a journal of the American Geophysical Union.
