Solar Activity 24 hr Summary...

Solar activity reached low levels due to C8/Sf flare from Region 2699
(S08E39, Dso/beta-gamma). The region appeared to stall in its growth
phase, however, a weak mixed polarity spot did appear in the trailer
portion of group. No CME signatures were detected in association with
the C8 flare; nor were any Earth-directed CMEs observed in available
coronagraph imagery.

.Forecast...
Solar activity is expected to be very low, with a chance for C-class
flares all three days (08-10 Feb) and slight chance for M-class flares
(R1-R2; Minor-Moderate radio blackouts) on days one and two due to the
modestly increased flare chances from Region 2699.

SOLAR FLARE! The unstable magnetic canopy of sunspot AR2699 erupted on Feb. 7th (1347 UT), producing a C8-class solar flare. This class of explosion would be considered minor during more active phases of the solar cycle, but now on the eve of Solar Minimum it is a significant eruption. AR2699 is becoming larger and more unsettled as it turns toward Earth, so more flares are possible in the hours and days ahead.

HINODE Captures Record Breaking Solar Magnetic Field

analyzing data of February 4, 2014 taken by the Solar Optical Telescope onboard HINODE

Astronomers at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) using the HINODE spacecraft observed the strongest magnetic field ever directly measured on the surface of the Sun. Analyzing data for 5 days around the appearance of this record breaking magnetic field, the astronomers determined that it was generated as a result of gas outflow from one sunspot pushing against another sunspot.

Dai/beta-gamma) produced multiple B-class flares this period, but began
to show signs of weakening. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed in

GROWING SUNSPOT: Sunspot AR2699 continues to grow, more than doubling in size since it appeared on Feb. 4th.

The sunspot has developed an unstable "beta-gamma" magnetic field that harbors energy for M-class solar flares. NOAA forecasters estimate a 15% chance of such explosions on Feb. 9th.

With two primary dark cores larger than Earth and a scattering of moon-sized magnetic condensations stretching more than 100,000 km across the surface of the sun, AR2699 is an easy target for backyard solar telescopes.

Sol's getting sleepy again.... several B-flares today including a B7. AR2699 is now Earth-facing. A new active region has appeared on the east limb, but appears very tiny at this time.

Akatsuki’s Amazing Views of Venus

Akatsuki was supposed to reach Venus and enter orbit on December 6, 2010, using an innovative ceramic thruster. Unfortunately, the crucial engine firing failed in dramatic fashion, when inadequate pressurant flow into the engine caused the thruster temperature to increase until the nozzle cracked. The spacecraft autonomously shut down its broken engine only partway through the intended orbit insertion burn, and it sailed right past Venus.

After determining that the engine wasn't salvageable, the resourceful team at JAXA vented all the remaining propellant to lighten the spacecraft and developed a brave plan to attempt orbit entry a second time. To make a long and dramatic story short, they succeeded.

Akatsuki has been at Venus since December 9, 2015, and in its final science orbit since April 4, 2016. This very elliptical orbit has a period of 10.5 days, traveling from a periapsis of around 10,000 km to an apoapsis of 360,000 km. Project scientist Takeshi Imamura likens the mission to a weather satellite for Venus, perched high above its swirling clouds, with a multi-day vantage point on cloud motions.

Egedal and colleagues studied recordings from Oct. 15, 2016, when the Magnetosphere Multiscale satellite passed through the point where the solar wind meets Earth's magnetic field.

"Our data clearly show that electrons suddenly cease to follow magnetic fields and zoom off in another direction, corkscrewing and turning. That begs for explanation," Egedal says.

The activity confirmed the theoretical descriptions of magnetic reconnection. But it violated the standard law governing the behavior of plasmas - clouds of charged particles that comprise, for example, the solar wind.

"The 'plasma frozen-in law' says electrons and magnetic fields have to move together always, and suddenly that does not apply here," says Egedal. "It's the clearest example ever to be measured in space, and it blew my mind."

"Our equations tell you reconnection cannot happen, but it does," Egedal says, "and our results show us which factors need to be added to the equations. When the law is violated, we can get an explosion. Even in Earth's moderate magnetic field, reconnection from an area just 10 kilometers across can change the motion of plasma thousands of kilometers distant."

A powerhouse of magnetosphere and aurora research, the IMAGE mission was a key driver of studies of the Sun-Earth connection from its launch on March 25, 2000, until its last contact on Dec. 18, 2005.

Now a watchful citizen scientist, NASA, and a team of IMAGE scientists and engineers detected and received data from the spacecraft. Here's how it happened.....

Hugh, I think you'll like this. Info released from Chinese communist channels past couple years about the moon. No official release, no fanfare, speaker worked for NASA long time, he kind if can't believe it. Gets into tetrahedral hyper-dimensional physics organizing the solar system.

Huge Sungrazing Comet Crashes Into The Sun

STEREO COR 2 solar spacecraft captured a large sungrazer comet crashing into the Sun on February 8, 2018. In these time-lapse images from the sun-monitoring satellite you can see the comet's huge tail as the comet makes a death dive towards the sun.
