I had to check the space environment when I heard about the transformer meltdown in NYC. Strangely, the NYPD statement said 'no extraterrestrial activity'
was observed, LOL.

NEW YEAR, NEW SUNSPOT: A new sunspot is emerging in the sun's northern hemisphere, breaking a string of 16 spotless days at the end of 2018. The unnumbered spot's magnetic polarity identifies it as a member of old Solar Cycle 24. Typical of Solar Minimum sunspots, it does not appear to pose a threat for strong solar flares.

New Sunspot Forms

The first new sunspot region in over 2 weeks has formed in time to open 2019. Region 2732 is located in the northwest quadrant and belongs to the outgoing Solar Cycle 24. Although the chances for solar flares remain low, this region will continue to be monitored over the next 24 hours for additional development.

SOLAR WIND, INCOMING: On Jan. 4th and 5th, high-speed solar wind flowing from a large hole in the sun's atmosphere will hit Earth's magnetic field. Minor geomagnetic storms and Arctic auroras are likely when the gaseous material arrives. Aurora visibility will be boosted by the dark skies of a New Moon.

FIRST IMAGES OF ULTIMA THULE: The first high-resolution images of Ultima Thule have reached Earth following New Horizons' historic flyby on New Year's Day. Hot off the presses, the photos reveal a pair of roughly spherical planetestimals stuck together in the middle. The contact binary strangely resembles BB-8:

"This flyby is a historic achievement," says New Horizons Principal Investigator Alan Stern of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado. "Never before has any spacecraft team tracked down such a small body so far away in the abyss of space. We're getting our first close-up look at ancient planetesimals."

Planetestimals are the building blocks of planets. Here in the inner solar system, no pristine examples remain for us to study. They have been swallowed by planets, hammered by asteroids, and scorched by solar radiation. Ultima Thule, however, has been preserved in the deep freeze of the outer solar system for more than 4 billion years. It is truly a relic of the genesis of planets.

SOLAR WIND IGNITES BIG AURORAS: Earth is entering a stream of solar wind flowing from a large hole in the sun's atmosphere. First contact on Jan. 4th ignited big auroras around the Arctic Circle.

"The auroras were really crazy, painting swirls all around the sky above me," says Kuznetsov. "The show lasted for well over 30 minutes with very powerful arches shining across the skies. These were the best auroras I've seen in months!"

G1-class geomagnetic storms are in progress as Earth moves deeper into the stream on Jan. 5th. Arctic sky watchers should remain alert for auroras for the rest of the weekend. This stream of solar wind is wide and should influence our planet for the next ~48 hours.
