On January 3, 03:26 Swedish time, the Chinese Chang'E-4 spacecraft landed successfully on the far side of the Moon. The Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) has developed one of the scientific instruments on board. The aim of the instrument is to study how the solar wind interacts with the lunar surface.

The Advanced Small Analyzer for Neutrals (ASAN) instrument was developed by the Swedish Institute of Space Physics in Kiruna - in collaboration with the Chinese National Space Science Center (NSSC).

The instrument investigates how the solar wind, a flow of charged particles from the Sun, interacts with the lunar surface. ASAN is mounted on the rover of Chang'E-4, which makes it possible to perform measurements at different locations. The measurements could shed light on the processes responsible for the formation of water on the Moon.

THE NITROGEN FRINGE: Over the weekend, a high-speed stream of solar wind buffeted Earth's magnetic field, sparking big green auroras around the Arctic Circle.

Last night in Utsjoki, Finland, Tiina Salonen of Aurora Holidays noticed something extra--a fringe of pink: [link to spaceweather.com]

This is a "nitrogen fringe." Most auroras are green--the color of oxygen atoms being struck by energetic particles from space between 100 km and 300 km above Earth's surface. Pink appears when energetic particles descend lower than usual, striking nitrogen molecules at the 100 km level and below.
"Auroras--both pink and green--danced all above us on Jan. 6th," says Salonen. "It was absolutely stunning!"

There is anecdotal evidence that Solar Minimum produces an unusual number of pink and even white auroras. Why? The "flavor" (chemical and magnetic composition) of solar wind during Solar Minimum may differ from other phases of the solar cycle, producing its own palette of color. If so, more pink lights may be in the offing on Jan. 7th as the solar wind continues to blow.

Rare Super Blood Wolf Moon - Sun, Earth and Moon Line Up Perfectly in Sky to Dazzle Skywatchers

Stargazers will be treated to three lunar events in January, including the rare "Super Blood Wolf Moon," which is expected to happen on January 20-21, 2019.

Each month's full Moon is called something different, and January's is a "Wolf Moon." This month's full Moon is also a Super Moon, when the moon is closer than usual to the earth. It's also a Blood Moon, or a total lunar eclipse.

Together, those create the "Super Blood Wolf Moon."

The next time you'll be able to see this rare occurrence will be in 2036.

WEEKEND GEOMAGNETIC UNREST: For the next few days, Earth is expected to skim through a number of minor solar wind streams associated with a southern hole in the sun's atmosphere. This will likely stir magnetic unrest around Earth's poles, albeit not full-fledged geomagnetic storms. Intermittent Arctic auroras are possible this weekend.

CLOSE ASTEROID FLYBY: On Jan. 8th, asteroid 2019 AS5 flew past Earth only 8600 km above our planet's surface. Nine hours after the flyby, it was discovered by the the Mt. Lemmon Survey telescope in Arizona. The asteroid was closer to our planet than many satellites.

If the 1 to 2 meter-wide space rock had hit Earth (and it almost did) it would have caused a brilliant fireball in the atmosphere with sonic booms and scattered meteorites on the ground--but no serious damage.

Earth's gravity significantly bent the asteroid's orbit during the flyby. To illustrate this effect, the Minor Planet Center has created an interactive 3D diagram of the encounter, which flung 2019 AS5 away from our planet after its brief visit. [link to minorplanetcenter.net (secure)]

Thousands of Stars, Including Our Sun, will Turn Into Crystals

Astronomers at the University of Warwick said this week they now have the first direct evidence that white dwarf stars – stars in an advanced stage of their evolution – ultimately solidify into crystals. That idea has been around for decades, but now new observations back it up. The astronomers who conducted this study say our skies must be filled with these crystal white dwarfs. They also point out that – long after it has swollen up as a red giant and swallowed the Earth – our sun is destined to become a crystal white dwarf, too, billions of years from now.

The new study – led by Pier-Emmanuel Tremblay – was published January 9, 2019 in the peer-reviewed journal Nature

THE SOLAR WIND IS COMING: A hole in the sun's atmosphere is facing Earth, and spewing a stream of solar wind in our direction. Minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible when the gaseous material arrives on Jan. 23rd and 24th. High-latitude sky watchers, especially those around the Arctic Circle, should be alert for auroras.

Aurora on the Way with a Wolf Moon Eclipse: Solar Storm Shortie: 01-21-2019

Our Sun ups the activity this week with a returning coronal hole that promises to send us some fast solar wind. This could bump us up to solar storm conditions, at least at high latitudes by mid-week. Aurora shows are possible at high latitudes with a fleeting chance at mid-latitudes as well. On top of that, we also have a bright region rotating into Earth-view over the next few days that should keep the solar flux boosted into the 70s and ensure marginal radio propagation on earth's dayside. THE SOLAR WIND HAS ARRIVED: Arriving a day earlier than expected, a stream of solar wind is enveloping Earth's magnetic field. Its source is a hole in the sun's atmosphere. We're just in the outskirts of the stream now. NOAA forecasters estimate a 60% chance of G1-class geomagnetic storms on Jan. 24th when Earth moves deeper inside the high-speed flow.

A METEOROID HITS THE MOON DURING LUNAR ECLIPSE: On Jan. 21st at 04:41:43 UT, a meteoroid slammed into the Moon. We know this because so many people witnessed the explosion. It happened during a total eclipse of the Moon, visible from five continents. Dr. Fritz Helmut Hemmerich photographed the eclipse from the Canary Islands of Spain and captured the fireball: [link to spaceweather.com]

Dozens of reliable images and videos of the impact have surfaced in the days since the eclipse. Analyzing one sharp image taken by Christian Fröschlin of the Netherlands [link to spaceweather.com] geologist Justin Cowart has estimated the selenographic coordinates of the impact site: 29.47S, 67.77W +/- 4km. This puts it just to the west of the lunar crater Lagrange H. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter may be able to use such coordinates to target its cameras and photograph the crater.

Shot an hour ago.
Felt like being in the middle of an alien invasion.
These are caused by light from streetlights etc. reflecting on tiny ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. The moon on the right.

Lunar light pillar over Antarctica

We see a fair number of photos of light pillars – shafts of light extending from the sun or other bright light source – taken from northerly latitudes. This one is caused by the moon, and it’s over Earth’s South Pole.
