MOLTEN SNOW MOON: According to folklore, last night's full Moon was the "Snow Moon." When it rose over Lake Superior, however, it looked more like molten lava.

This is an 'inferior mirage', caused by a layer of relatively warm air just above the lake's surface. A temperature gradient in the air--warmer near the open water and cooler above--created an upside-down image of the Moon below the actual Moon. The two images, reddened by the filtering effect of the low atmosphere, merged into a molten shape.

The mirage is also known as an 'Etruscan vase mirage,' so-called by Jules Verne, and an 'omega mirage' after its resemblance to the last letter of the Greek alphabet.

They just finished the southern Missouri earthquake conference, they are nervous folks. I’ve had my issues but I’ve picked up on some of the stuff that’s going on and I know they were looking for some energy soon, I’m trying to be a help because I know I was such a disaster at the end. Does it rain on the Sun? Yes, although what falls is not water but extremely hot plasma.
An example occurred in mid-July 2012 after an eruption on the Sun that produced both a Coronal Mass Ejection and a moderate solar flare and after... A coronal rain

Cosmic Rays Increasing for the 4th Year in a Row

Feb. 21, 2019: Cosmic rays in the stratosphere are intensifying for the 4th year in a row. This finding comes from a campaign of almost weekly high-altitude balloon launches conducted by the students of Earth to Sky Calculus. Since March 2015, there has been a ~13% increase in X-rays and gamma-rays over central California, where the students have launched hundreds of balloons.

IT'S BACK! A BIG HOLE IN THE SUN'S ATMOSPHERE: During solar minimum, long-lasting holes open in the sun's atmosphere, releasing streams of solar wind into space.

One of those holes is turning to face Earth now, and it's a big one: [link to spaceweather.com]

We've seen this hole before. It opened in the summer of 2018 and has been spinning around as the sun rotates, lashing Earth with solar wind approximately once a month. The last time our planet felt its gaseous emissions, in late Jan. 2019, bright auroras surged around the Arctic Circle and some of the lights even spilled into the USA.

G1-class geomagnetic storms are likely on Feb. 26th or 27th when the solar wind returns. Stay tuned!

SOLAR EXPLOSION MISSES EARTH: Earlier today, Feb. 24th, a magnetic filament on the sun became unstable and erupted. The blast hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. NOAA analysts have modeled the expanding storm cloud, and they say it will miss Earth. No geomagnetic storm will result from the explosion.

Solar Flare 10 Billion Times More Powerful than Sun’s Detected By Astronomers

The Hawaii-based James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) has discovered a stellar flare 10 billion times more powerful than the Sun's solar flares, a history-making discovery that could unlock decades-old questions about the origin of our own Sun and planets, giving insight into how these celestial bodies were born.

The flare is thought to be caused by a disruption in an intense magnetic field actively funneling material onto a young, growing star as it gains mass from its surroundings. The event occurred in one of the nearest star-forming regions to the Earth, the Orion Nebula.The flare was observed on a very young star called JW 566, about 1,269 light-years away in the Orion Nebula.

Solar output has been very low past 48 hours. Cosmic ray energy makes it in during solar minimum. The issue now seems to be that the magnetosphere is weaker. I imagine that intensifies the effect of the cosmic ray influx.

Hi Hugh, that post from twitter in Simple's post above, is from @halocme. I just went to the page. You might like it. I don't know if you do twitter. Guy is a solar physicist (alum UTkyAst). Have no idea where that is. He believes solar polar magnetic field must be measured properly before we can make predictions about space weather and solar cycles that make sense. (From his bio).

A MONTH WITHOUT SUNSPOTS? It could happen. The sun has been without spots since the beginning of February.Only 3 more days are necessary for an entire month of spotlessness. This long interval of blank suns is a sign that Solar Minimum is underway. This phase of the solar cycle brings extra cosmic rays, long-lasting holes in the sun's atmosphere, and strangely pink auroras.
