The nucleus passed only 1.2 million km above the Sun's visible surface. A remnant survived, but quickly dissipated, as ISON became part of the aether. :peeweeomg: Wow , epic. The light convection when it lit up. Intense. Also perhaps an underrated preview of what the sun is going to be doing by the end of this November. |

The sunspots themselves--if they exist--are still hidden behind the edge of the sun. Solar rotation will bring them into view this weekend. Briefly, the sun assumed the form of a mushroom cloud, followed by a sequence of other shapes including a rectangle. Giant sunspot AR2778 (note the black streak, lower left, in the image above) was stretched, compressed, and ultimately obliterated. Finally got my eyeballs on this sunspot thru a telescope. Just a brief glimpse but very satisfying. The intermediate region has N-S polarity conflict, but may be dissipating. Even a simple alpha or beta spot can produce a big flare under the right conditions. This region is large enough to warrant extra vigilance. The sun can be very unpredictable at times. I Love it. This is why we watch & learn.
