SOLAR FLARE AND POSSIBLE CME: Sunspot AR2792 unleashed a C4-class solar flare today, Dec. 14th at 1437 UT:

X-rays from the flare ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, causing a minor shortwave radio bloackout over South America:

First-look data suggest that the explosion also hurled a CME into space, with a possible Earth-directed component. Stay tuned for updates as more data arrive.

TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE SUN: Despite heavy clouds and rain, many observers in southern Chile witnessed a total eclipse of the sun today. "I photographed it during a rainstorm," reports Rodrigo Alonso of Pucon, Chile, where the eclipse was intermittently visible through gaps in the clouds:

Solar Activity 24 hr Summary...

Solar activity reached low levels during the period. Region 2792
(S22E39, Bxo/beta) produced a C4/Sf at 14/1437 UTC with an associated
Type II radio sweep with a shock velocity of 606 km/s. SDO/AIA 193 and
304 imagery indicated ejecta escaped the visible disk at the peak of the
event. SOHO/LASCO coronagraph imagery observed a CME from the SE limb
associated with this event. Initial analysis indicated the CME is likely
off the Sun-Earth line, however we await the results of a WSA-Enlil
model run to verify this analysis. New Region 2793 (S16E60, Axx/alpha)
produced a few B-class events, but was otherwise stable.

.Forecast...
Solar activity is expected to be very low on 15-17 Dec, with a chance
for C-class flares all three days.

A few tiny spots but lots of activity in the Southern Hemisphere. The Northern Hemisphere is overdue to join the cycle 25 party. Another strange fact--the 2 largest events came from the farside, an M1 & M4. Many mysteries await....

Solar activity very low now. Things will pick up whenever the northern hemisphere gets into gear for Cycle 25. So far, most of the action has been in the south.
