MAGNIFICENT ERUPTION MISSES EARTH: NOAA's GOES-16 satellite was looking at the sun yesterday, Jan. 8th, when a huge filament of magnetism launched itself into space. The satellite's Solar Ultraviolet Imager (SUVI) captured this movie of the magnificent eruption:

Debris from the blast formed the core of a bright coronal mass ejection (CME). Here it is, recorded by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO).

NOAA analysts say the storm cloud will not hit Earth. Nevertheless, this eruption is noteworthy because of its dimensions--one of the biggest in years. Many thanks to reader Jhon Henry Osorio Orzco of Medelín, Colombia, for drawing it to our attention.

INTERPLANETARY SHOCK WAVE SPARKS AURORAS: Surprising forecasters, a minor interplanetary shock wave hit Earth's magnetic field on Jan. 11th. The impact just after 08:30 UT did not trigger a geomagnetic storm. However, strong magnetic fields downstream of the shockfront opened a crack in Earth's magnetosphere. Suddenly, "we were seeing bright blue auroras over Abisko, Sweden," reports Chad Blakley of Lights over Lapland, whose automated webcam captured the display:

"They were visible in twilight," he says. "My cell phone was buzzing with reports from guides and friends who could see the rare blue Northern Lights dancing overhead."

"Later, the auroras turned green," he says, "and the display is still underway."

The shock wave was not expected. In retrospect, however, perhaps it should have been. On Jan. 8th, a huge filament of magnetism erupted from the surface of the sun. The eruption did not seem to be Earth-directed. However, today's event may have been a glancing blow from the debris.

An Interplanetary Shock Wave Hit Earth's Magnetic Field on Jan. 11th

MEANWHILE IN ENGLAND: "The solar eruption and consequent shockwave reported on Spaceweather.com certainly was geoeffective, sparking not only auroras, but also twitching magnetometer needles," reports Stuart Green who recorded the shaking of his local magnetic field in Preston UK:

"It is always so exciting to experience the effects of space weather here at ground level," he says.

Green's magnetometer is buried in his backyard garden about 0.5 meters deep. This allows very sensitive (sub nanotesla) measurements of magnetic declination. The instrument has little trouble detecting geomagnetic storms, CMEs, and interplanetary transients like the one that hit Earth on Jan. 11th.

Large Outbursts from an Active Galaxy were Captured by Multiple Observatories

Scientists have discovered the most predictable and frequent example of flares from an active galaxy.

When they saw the first flare, called ASASSN-14ko they thought it was the explosion of one of the galaxy’s billions of stars. But after analyzing years of data from multiple observatories and seeing the flares appear over and over again they now think that it’s a giant star being slowly devoured as it orbits the galaxy’s central black hole.

...BUT SURPRISES ARE POSSIBLE: On Jan. 8th, the sun was blank and spotless, with no chance of a solar flare. Suddenly, the biggest magnetic filament in years launched itself off the surface of the sun. At first it appeared the debris would miss Earth. But it didn't miss. On Jan. 11th, a shock wave arrived, sparking the brightest auroras of 2021:

THE SUN SPUTTERS BACK TO LIFE: Solar Cycle 25 really is underway. Breaking a string of 12 spotless days, a new sunspot (AR2796) is emerging in the sun's southern hemisphere, inset in this magnetic map from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO):

The +/- polarity of this sunspot marks it as a member of new Solar Cycle 25. Old Solar Cycle 24 sunspots would be the opposite, -/+, according to Hale's Law.

AR2796 is small and so far poses no threat for strong flares. It may not be the only sunspot, however. NASA's STEREO-A spacecraft is monitoring an active region just behind the sun's eastern limb. It could be a larger sunspot group soon to appear.
