PM says militant video ´chilling stuff´***
Prime Minister John Howard says Australian authorities are continuing to investigate the origins of a video that appears to show a masked extremist with an Australian accent.

Mr Howard says the video is "chilling stuff".

In the video, an armed and masked man berates Western values and calls on Britain and the United States to withdraw troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) is investigating the tape and officers have spoken to the family of a former Australian soldier who went missing in central Asia four years ago.

However, police are refusing to say if former Army private Mathew Stewart is linked to the investigations into the tape.

AFP officers have spoken to Mr Stewart´s family on Queensland´s Sunshine Coast.

Mr Stewart´s mother, Vicki Stewart, has reportedly said she does not believe her son is the man in the video.

Mrs Stewart told the ABC some time ago that she believes her son took his own life.

Mr Howard would not elaborate on whether Mr Stewart is linked to the investigation.

"I have read the newspaper reports - I am not going to confirm or deny them," the Prime Minister said. "I´m not in a position to do so; the investigation is going on. He does sound like an Australian."

Attorney-General Philip Ruddock says there is no information to suggest Mr Stewart is the man shown in the video.

Mr Ruddock says authorities have not yet verified that the man in the video has an Australian accent and investigations into the man´s identity are continuing.

"The news reporting is purely speculative and agencies are carrying out thorough investigations, but we have not formed a view," he said.

"I will wait until the relevant agencies are able to better inform me on it."
