Why is the moon so low in the western sky?
I always thought the moon follows the sun by rising in the east and setting in the west but its almost 10pm here and its hanging low on the western horizon already? What's going on here?

This site will tell you where the moon will be on whatever date and time you choose. [link to www.moongiant.com]

The moon does not follow the sun. It varies by quite a bit every night.

BEcause it does that periodically depending on where it is in it's cycle vs earths tilt etc. It has been in the low western sky periodically my entire life and I am 63, so I don't think it's new. It rises and SETs each day, and setting time in Denver Colorado, is about 10 pm tonight. It rose about 7:44 this morning here.

AC 1247254, look at what you wrote. It does always rise in the east and set in the west, but if it set at the same times as the sun, and rose with the sun, you wouldn't be seeing it at night, would you?

Moonageddon in two weeks

In two weeks, Earth could be headed for a big showdown according to some, for the moon will be at its closest point to Earth in 18 years, an event that is known as a "lunar perigee". One astronomer, who titled the event 'SuperMoon' has predicted that it may bring worrying disruptions to Earth's climate patterns.

Lunar perigee happens every month. It is simply the closest part of the orbit. What is significant with this one is it will coincide with a full moon.

Re: Why is the moon so low in the western sky?
Every month the Sun and Moon have a phase of conjunction together. This is the 1-3 days every month of 'no moon' or 'dark moon'.

After the phase of 'dark moon' we have the Moon moving away from the Sun and we will see a thin silver crescent in the low western sky for a very short period of time. The ancients called this the 'new moon' and Babylon actually started their 'months' by when they saw the new sighting of the thin crescent of the moon in the western sky right after sun set.

If you keep watching through the month. You will notice the crescent getting bigger each night and staying in the sky longer...as it moves away from the Sun. About 15 days after the 'new moon crescent' you will see a full moon and you can know that when there is a full moon the Sun sits on one side of the Earth while the moon sits on the other. The moon will be seen in the sky for most of the night on full moons. The close the moon is to the Sun, the less time it will be seen in the sky.

You can find this thin crescent in the western sky every month as it sits close to the Sun.

The moon does not have to be in perigee to be low in the western sky.

you see, the earth is spinning and wobbling while it orbits. this causes the moon to change positions in the sky.

People....ALL new thin crescent 'new moon phases' are low in the western sky.

Its nothing to do with perigee of the moon.

Re: Why is the moon so low in the western sky?
I feel like Im repeating myself for so many threads on this topic have started.

Here is a site that keeps track of watching for the 'new moon sighting' of every month and they have images going back to 1997. In some religions, this is their whole foundation of starting a new month, with the new moon sighting.

You can look through all the images and see that the crescent moon is NOT always on a 'side' angel.

Go to the link and scroll down till you see a list of 'photos of moon' with years beside each link (near bottom of page).
