It's that many are following a MAN who claims to be IN PLACE of Christ. That's just not possible. In persona Christi applies to an ordained Catholic priest, consecrated to Our Lord not just the Holy Father. As at the Last Supper, Jesus changed the bread and wine into His body and blood, so does every Catholic priest since the Apostles. + + + You’ve probably heard the saying “in persona Christi” applied to priests. It’s a Latin phrase that very nicely sums up who and what a priest is. Translated, it means “in the person of Christ.” How that’s understood makes all the difference in the world. For some, “in persona Christi” means that the priest merely represents Jesus before the people. Others believe it means that the priest simply performs actions that are Christ-like. The true meaning of the phrase, however, is far deeper than we can imagine without the gift of faith. For it means nothing less than that a priest, in a certain metaphysical sense, is Jesus. Don’t take that to mean that when a man is ordained he somehow becomes divine like our Lord. No, as any priest will tell you, he retains his humanity just like the rest of us – complete with the inclination toward sin that afflicts us all. Rather, at his ordination, a man’s soul is mystically transformed and given a permanent mark – also called a “character” – that empowers him to do for the People of God what ultimately only Jesus can do, most notably change ordinary bread and wine into the Lord’s body and blood, and forgive our sins in the Sacrament of Confession. How does the pope have the power to do this? Confession? Only GOD himself can forgive sins...not man on earth. You friend, have taken the mark. TXGal, It's God's plan that man in the place of Christ would forgive sins. The Holy Father was/is a priest. Believing only a few verses in Scripture is Protestant no matter how much you say you are not Protestant. You can't reject John 20:23. Jesus is speaking there. Read the verse, is it not true, one has to hear someone's sins to forgive them? Who was Jesus addressing, the first priests, the Apostles. John 6:21 He said therefore to them again: Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent me, I also send you. [22] When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost. [23] Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained. U about ready to answer my question now? Two threads and you still cannot do so. So have I now become your enemy for telling you the TRUTH? Galatians 4:16 *********************************** You call me paranoid. I call you uninformed. :tgdmwt: |

Quoting: TXGal4TruthWow, you never really struck me as the feminist type. Are you a Wiccan? :) Just kidding. But seriously, I don't know your specific branch of christianity, but if you are following this entity Christ - then likely everything you know about him comes down through the collection of books that was selected (and heavily edited) by the Catholic Church. Can you admit that, as unpleasant as it may sound to you, as a christian - your christianity is indelibly imprinted by the church that brought you the legends in the first place? So how can you possibly challenge one particular aspect of the Catholic Church but accept the others. Better to chuck the whole shebang and follow the essential energies of the original idea. Psalm 51:1-2 is very clear about it “Be gracious to me O GOD, according to your lovingkindness; according to the greatness of your compassion blot out my transgressions.” but consider that Jesus granted permission to 'ordinary' men to forgive sins in John 20:23.. he said: “If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained personally.. I believe what it says in Psalms Please compare the two references in scripture which refer to the same utterance of Jesus: "Whose soever sins you remit, they are remitted to them, and whose soever sins you retain, they are retained." John 20:23 "And when you stand praying, forgive, if you have ought against any, that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses." Quite obviously, Jesus wasn't declaring that men have the power to forgive sins against GOD, but was speaking of forgiving trespasses (sins) against YOU, by your neighbor or brother. The version of the bible you quoted makes it seem more like you took the meaning to be, but it is still quite obvious, due to many other passages in the bible, that it is referring to sins committed against YOU, that you are to forgive. It is pure blasphemy to claim the power to forgive sins against God, in fact that is one of the reasons that the Pharisees wanted to stone Jesus, and then later crucified Him, because He claimed the ability to forgive sin, and was supposedly "just a man", according to the Pharisees. |
