You’ve probably heard the saying “in persona Christi” applied to priests. It’s a Latin phrase that very nicely sums up who and what a priest is. Translated, it means “in the person of Christ.” How that’s understood makes all the difference in the world.

For some, “in persona Christi” means that the priest merely represents Jesus before the people. Others believe it means that the priest simply performs actions that are Christ-like. The true meaning of the phrase, however, is far deeper than we can imagine without the gift of faith. For it means nothing less than that a priest, in a certain metaphysical sense, is Jesus.

Don’t take that to mean that when a man is ordained he somehow becomes divine like our Lord. No, as any priest will tell you, he retains his humanity just like the rest of us – complete with the inclination toward sin that afflicts us all.

Rather, at his ordination, a man’s soul is mystically transformed and given a permanent mark – also called a “character” – that empowers him to do for the People of God what ultimately only Jesus can do, most notably change ordinary bread and wine into the Lord’s body and blood, and forgive our sins in the Sacrament of Confession.

It's God's plan that man in the place of Christ would forgive sins. The Holy Father was/is a priest.

Believing only a few verses in Scripture is Protestant
no matter how much you say you are not Protestant.

You can't reject John 20:23. Jesus is speaking there.
Read the verse, is it not true, one has to hear someone's
sins to forgive them? Who was Jesus addressing, the first
priests, the Apostles.

John 6:21
He said therefore to them again: Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent me, I also send you. [22] When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost. [23] Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.

Wow, you never really struck me as the feminist type. Are you a Wiccan? :)

Just kidding. But seriously, I don't know your specific branch of christianity, but if you are following this entity Christ - then likely everything you know about him comes down through the collection of books that was selected (and heavily edited) by the Catholic Church. Can you admit that, as unpleasant as it may sound to you, as a christian - your christianity is indelibly imprinted by the church that brought you the legends in the first place? So how can you possibly challenge one particular aspect of the Catholic Church but accept the others.

Better to chuck the whole shebang and follow the essential energies of the original idea.

I absolutely agree with what you said TXGal..

Psalm 51:1-2 is very clear about it

“Be gracious to me O GOD, according to your lovingkindness; according to the greatness of your compassion blot out my transgressions.”

but consider that Jesus granted permission to 'ordinary' men to forgive sins in John 20:23..

he said:

“If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained

personally.. I believe what it says in Psalms
 Quoting: RTS

Please compare the two references in scripture which refer to the same utterance of Jesus:

"Whose soever sins you remit, they are remitted to them, and whose soever sins you retain, they are retained." John 20:23

"And when you stand praying, forgive, if you have ought against any, that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses."

Quite obviously, Jesus wasn't declaring that men have the power to forgive sins against GOD, but was speaking of forgiving trespasses (sins) against YOU, by your neighbor or brother.

The version of the bible you quoted makes it seem more like you took the meaning to be, but it is still quite obvious, due to many other passages in the bible, that it is referring to sins committed against YOU, that you are to forgive. It is pure blasphemy to claim the power to forgive sins against God, in fact that is one of the reasons that the Pharisees wanted to stone Jesus, and then later crucified Him, because He claimed the ability to forgive sin, and was supposedly "just a man", according to the Pharisees.

I mentioned the billions of years, according to YOUR beliefs.

6,000 years is right in the ballpark. In fact, 6 is the number of man, and a day is as a thousand years to God. Mans rule on this earth was for 6,000 years, or 6 mere days to God. The 7th day will be spent with God as our ruler, at least for the elect, it will.

Revelations 3:21

“He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit with me on my throne, as I also overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.”

This is assuming of course that you think Jesus is equal to GOD
and that you are worthy by actually following what Jesus says you HAVE to do to be worthy

Creation myths?

How do you know that they are ALL myths? Doesn't it stand to reason that a man that lived thousands of years ago (Moses for example), who was someone closer to the beginning of it all, would have a LOT better chance at getting the actual story of what happened correct, than someone like yourself, wayyy down at the end of time?

1 Tim. 2:5 - Christ is the only mediator, but He was free to decide how His mediation would be applied to us. The Lord chose to use priests of God to carry out His work of forgiveness.

Lev. 5:4-6; 19:21-22 - even under the Old Covenant, God used priests to forgive and atone for the sins of others.

Pope Benedict IX (1033 - 1045) committed murders and adulteries in broad daylight, robbed pilgrims and was regarded as a hideous criminal. The people drove him out of Rome: The Catholic encyclopaedia says, “He was a disgrace to the chair of Peter.”

========================

THis was the time of the Orthodox split. I think the good Lord intended one shepherd one fold, but not a billion sleep walkers that are under the spell of Club Infallible, with leadership provided by the Kosher Nostra.(Kosher Nostra was deleted by the shill poster Anonymous Coward 1288597)

Catholics never had a successful reformation. 1560 Trent was a reactionary council that made extra curricular (non scriptural) spurious beliefs even worse. Why would Christ save any sheep outside the fold unless RC Catholics totally screwed up? Mark Twain's Joan of Arc should tell you that Catholic men have been XXX since the introduction of the rosary.

I think we need TXGal to come back and be Joan of Arc and kick some papal butt.

"non scriptural"...that's evidence of MR. Bible Alone.

The Rosary is a powerful prayer. Don't listen to him.

Vulgarities, oooh, how Classic hates Catholicism, do you think he is fallen away?

Busy guy, came over to trash the faith some more in
TXGal's thread. You used "Club infallible" in the atheist thread. (at least I signed my name to keep track. As a paid shill I guess you don't do that)

gotta come up something new Classic,

Wrong - got to come up with something old. The apostolic Catholic faith.

Vulgarities - you mean the ugly truth?

Can't say Kosher Nostra? Now we know which god you do worship.

Slime talk is vulgar, worse than that, you used it to mock Our Lord's mother.

it's clear as a bell after this laundry list (thx txgal!) that the popes recruited fellow pedo mohammed as an islam 2.0 strategy. mohammed didn't make the sick shit he and his minions did up - they were just doing what they were created by the vatican to do...

Classic,

You call me a shill, if it makes you feel good. I am defending the faith, I don't care.

I can't imagine, some of these Catholic haters, to name one,
Classic, he tries to be clever while attacking the things
of God. Who needs his wit, shame on him.

You're Orthodox? Why don't you say specifically? The Orthodox are beautiful, the Church recognizes their Sacraments. So....

TXGal, shame on you,

Your mother in Heaven, both of them are crying at your
Catholic hating threads. Fallen away Catholics are so
bitter.

I guess you'll have to paste from another unbiased thread,
