Re: Anyone been to a Rainbow Gathering?
The gathering is loosely modeled after ancient native american gatherings of tribes. I remember hearing Northern Californias four major tribes sacred place to gather was atop Mt Shasta. The gatherings were a chance to celebrate the harvests and warriors, hold trade and story circle and healing and creative ceremonies, and to pray for peace. Everyone who chose to could go and there everyone sat as equals in each others circle and listened to the others speak. Our gatherings today also reflect the fragmentation of world views and forms of expression as they are brought together in a setting where people can learn (often for the first time) to live together and care for each other. We now arrive at the pivital moment and point around which the gathering has formed and by which we mark its completion each year. In silence held by most from sun up to noon all over the gathering area on the fourth of July anyone who wants to participate gathers in the main meadow and adds to the collective silent prayers for peace that day, until at high noon the children whose families camp at kiddie village, enter the main meadow into the circle of prayerful masses to symbolically and litterally break the silence. Anyone who goes to a gathering and doesnt stand in this circle may have driven all that way just to sit on the ground w a bunch of progressively dirty people they dont even know yet, eating food most will never recognize. And they probably never even saw the rainbow. If you keep your heart closed and your iron mask on you will never see a person as they truely are. Try complete surrender with your dream, you can only ever get back exactly what you put into it. If you start measuring your connection with the divine by the beauty you see and experience in the world around you, youll have a pretty damn good bench mark for where all your critiques may be constructive and useful. And you need not look far. And ps Go camp while it is still legal.

I went in 2002-0r was it 3? anyway, it was in michigan. The people were kind, welcoming and peaceful....most of them. Looking at the most recent happenings Im not sure what this year will look like. For one, the undisciplined next generation seems to be rebelling (as any next generation will). Another is that more and more people are learning that this kind of thing exhists and its only a matter of time before we have a haight-ashbury thing going on. I dont mean to be a downer, Im just trying to be realistic (for myself as well). I fear that its only a matter of time before people attempt to take advantage of these kind, trusting people.
just go, have a good time, be kind, check your anger at the gate, and respect the earth while youre there. unfortunately not everybody does that, so try and be one of the good ones =)
and dont go there if youre just looking for a place to get messed up-those are going to be the first rotten apples to try and spoil the barrel. (im not talkig about w$$d. that doesnt count, I mean the dangerous stuff.)

I think what we all are looking and hoping for is found with God. In fact he tells us. It is amazing how people just cannot see.

And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods. Ez 34:25

The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.
And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited. Isa. 24:22

Noisy cities will be abandoned.
Fortresses and watchtowers will become permanent caves.
They will be a delight for wild donkeys and pastures for flocks. Until the Spirit is poured on us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is considered a forest.
Justice will rule in the wilderness
and righteousness in the fertile field.
And this righteousness will bring peace.
Yes, it will bring quietness and confidence forever.
My people will live in safety, quietly at home.
They will be at rest. Isa. 32:14

Re: Anyone been to a Rainbow Gathering?
Went to the gathering in WV in 1990. The naked chicks got offended at you for looking at their tits. The fat naked chicks got offended because I wouldn't wash them in the river. The food was all either vegetarian or McDumpster. And they beat the shit out of a tranny who was panhandling in front of a redneck bar in town. The weed was sparse but good. And the park ranger showed up, looked at the permits and left us alone. Not at all like what's been happening at the gatherings as of late.

I didn't last more than 3 days. I need meat. If a woman is naked, I am going to stare at her tits. Nothing can change that. And I don't like washing fat chicks. Not chunky. I mean 400 pound monsters. I ain't touching them. I did like the all of the hugs and "Welcome home brother"s. I had just left my wife and was really, really upset and needed those hugs more than anyone could imagine.

It was amazing how many of those hippies were rich kids. And then there were the rich kids who chose to eat out of dumpsters and live in abandoned houses. Not really my scene man.

they were actors. it's a soldier mission on you, man. it's a conspiracy. they're looking for draft dodgers, communists, and highwaymen. dude, I was like visiting california in the 60s, and this guy named charles maddox and his friends were there, they were like, hey why don't you come with us he's a brilliant guy.....next thing you know he's getting arrested and his friends are running off back to the air force, they were narcing him. now these days they tell a bunch of muslims how to attack airports in belgium, and since all the hispanics took over california military, they don't give a fuck what you whites and blacks do to one another. maybe that guy larry page remembers those days with Nancy, he should have never treated those girls that way. I was stopped at a roadblock and car searched by the gestapo once while driving through the national forest when they apparently were having a Rainbow Gathering.

Just great. name added to yet another police state list.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1289332

I was stopped at a road block in Pedernales Falls
state park in TX in about 1978. Luckily, I had
dropped a hit of purple microdot about an hour or
two earlier and was just starting to trip balls.
I don't recall what I said, what the cops said, or
the drive home. But I'll never forget coming around
that bend in the road and seeing cops stopping
every vehicle just when I started to peak.
Had three amigos in the car with me too, all of
us had dropped the microdot.

In 78' a check point was unheard of.

Re: Anyone been to a Rainbow Gathering?
Yep. Was at a smaller gather in WA a while back.

If you're not a vegetarian, bring bacon. If you want to make friends who are not vegetarian, bring bacon, and cook it over an open fire. The smell will travel across the camp, and people will be lured by the scent of the sweet ambrosia.

Bring enough to share. Sharing is in the spirit of Rainbow.

Be aware of your surroundings, and if possible, set up your camp somewhere fortifiable. There will be some people who are high and drunk as balls wandering around. If your camp is easy to access, and your tent easy to enter, people might wander in, not realizing it isn't theirs.

The majority of people aren't an issue, but there's always that small percentage of people who you have to consider.

If you want to know how clean the food is at the kitchens, volunteer at a kitchen.

If you want to party, and like your booze, hang out at A camp. If you want bonfires and good vibes, hang out at Main Circle.

Rainbow is pretty diverse, so you'll find your crowd somewhere there if you're looking for them.... or just lure them in with the smell of bacon.

Yeah it's a bunch of drumming and pot smoking and acid trips. Bring candy bars, preferably Kit Kat, if you want to make friends and score weed. Most of these gatherings are held out in the middle of nowhere and half the people don't bring food.

You have to be a rich kid to afford to be a modern hippie. I've known some of the rainbow types and they are big time hypocritical posers.

Re: Anyone been to a Rainbow Gathering?
I went 25 years ago to some beautiful place in western Colorado. The local cops thought we were all felons, but I managed to get to the place and park. My intention was to go there and get laid.

What a waste of time! Beautiful country, and swimming in an ice cold lake at 95 degrees with a bunch of other naked folks, including chicks. Good to see, but absolutely no chance of getting laid. If you didn't bring a girl, you didn't get one to bang. If you did, you might lose her.

I left in the middle of a massive rainstorm when the cops had better things to do than hassle me. I had nothing illegal, but I don't like confrontation and it seemed like a waste.

Ultimately, it was a long drive to get disappointed.

The cashier at the local walmart was talking about this today.

She said they come thru, living naked in the forest and pretty much ruin the land. Then they move on.

The bugs are so bad in the forest, and if these hippies smell awful, the bugs would have a feast.

Yep its all that, plus as happened at the Missouri Gathering in the 80's roughly 2/3 of the people knew how to party and about 1/3 knew how to camp. Also, if you end up as part of the group that they don't like, expect to learn a side of democracy you would rather not experience, it's called Mob Rule.

If you are going, refrain from using money on the site. Upon arrival, leave all your alcohol at the A-camp, so they won't have to pass the hat and go to town to buy beer. Be respectful while taking pictures of people, ask first if at all possible. Find out where the latrines are, or better yet help dig at least one. Learn how to trade for what you want or need, think of the experience as what would happen if our civilization were to fail and we still needed to function. Do help out at the various kitchens and communal campfires, such as gathering dead firewood from the forest. Learn some good jokes and stories to share. And when leaving bring out as many bags of garbage as you can fit in or on the car.

They find pristine sacred untouched wilderness and invite anyone and everyone to come trash it for a month.

Brilliant example of new age motives.

Intentions are not what matters. Results matter. Its called reality.

The reality is rainbow gathering is super destructive. Make it a weekend and plan the rest of the week as clean up.

Wild animals have so little...keep out with your giant party.

Bunch of dirty grifters. These idiots descended on an area I used to bike at and they were a total pain in the ass.

Pissing and shitting in the woods and not covering it up, litter all over, bunch of drugged out morons begging for change and asking where they can buy more drugs.

...and yeah, they stink. Deodorant costs money that is better used for drugs and they don't frequent places with showers. When they are shitting in the woods they aren't using toilet paper either, so most of them just end up smelling like a mixture of BO and ass.
